I mean Spurier is a jackass. When did Billy spurn Tennessee?
Yeah it's all in jest - folks think that just because a guy is born in Tennessee and has any modicum of talent, he should go to UT.
Billy was born in Cookeville, but his family moved early on and he actually played high school ball in Georgia.

Yeah,Spurrier went to Florida because Tennessee had a run heavy offense that didn't fit in with how Spurrier was a big time passer. He was recruited by Tennessee in basketball though. I think with the Heisman trophy and National championship as a coach that it all worked out.

The Napier joke is normal coming from a rival fanbase. Silly but harmless.

I’ve had interaction with Spurrier several times. Most in the 90’s. He was always a really cool guy. I wanted to hate him but he was a really good dude.
Cool story if mine...
Was on the way home (south of Louisville, KY at the time) in 1997 from Delaware.
Plane went from Newark to Cincy to Lville.
The last leg was on a 3 seat wide, twin prop (maybe DC9??) plane.
As I was walking to the gate, I noticed a guy that looked like CSS, so as I sat at the gate in my orange Power T cap being eyed by this guy, I asked, "Coach?".
He slyly replied with a "Yeah...".
The next 2 plus hours were a football fan's dream !!!

We talked about him being from the Tri-Cities area where Mom and Dad grew up, why he chose to go to Florida, what brought us to that meeting in Cincinatti, and just the state of football in general. Come to find out he was on a recruiting swing seeing two QBs...he never confirmed, but I suspected later it was Wuerfell and Brohm.

He parted with "You all are going to be tough out this year. Best of luck!".
I responded with, "Hope you all beat everyone on the schedule not named Tennessee.".
He was an engaging, down to Earth, solid guy.

That was my experience as well.
