Plaschke's column in today's LA Times is a must read for anyone who loves college basketball.

Thanks for the pointer. 20 years now already. Wow. The clip of Hank Gathers stumbling and falling was tough to watch the night it happened. I also seem to remember Jeff Fryer really stepped it up during the NCAA tournament and made a big difference. We were at a Capitals hockey game during the Bama win and all we did during the game was check the score of the LMU-Bama game constantly. Didn't really pay attention much to the action in front of us. Most every hoops fan I knew just wanted LMU to keep winning because it seemed like it was the right thing to happen.

My brother had the NCAA games and the LSU game on VHS and I grew up watching them. I was in awe of Fryer and Kimble growing up.

Had they drawn anyone other than Vegas in the regional final, they might well have been in the Final Four.

When I was a kid, my dads business partner who was a big USC guy was very close w kimble and gathers. We went to most of the games, and even remember riding on his shoulders. We were at the first game he collapsed. I was really young, but remember random images of being at the games and crying when he died.

I remember his death vaguely. I remember it happening but had forgotten all of the context.

I remember LMU putting up 182 in a game that season which made a 9 year old follow this as much as he could at the time.
