The only thing I can come up with is that he meant Johnny, and yes, that would have made more sense than Bill Battle... They had several options in 1970 better than Bill Battle. The cupboard was full and Tennessee was a top 5-10 job at the time. 28 year old Bill Battle was a strange choice.Dicky left in 69. Bill Majors died in 65
I lived the Battle hiring. Practically everyone thought it was Johnny's job except one guy, Bob Woodruff. Woodruff claimed he wanted to keep the staff together but Dickey took both coordinators with him to Florida so what was there to keep? After Battle failed, Woodruff had to hire JM after the PItt NC or he'd been burnt at the stake.
My father once said many thought Bill Majors would have been a better head coach than Johnny. He was just as knowledgeable about the game, had the same feel but didnt have the ego and other "johnny' issues.
