Just finished watching the CBP and CLK interviews following a Big Orange Caravan stop ( Big Orange Caravan rolls thru East Tennessee)
and Coach Kiffin intimated that, although he enjoys the Caravans, he's missing out on valuable time spent recruiting and evaluating talent on the road. How important are these Big Orange Caravans? Isn't it safe to say that a vast majority of VolNation is already extremely psyched about the upcoming season and anybody still doubting Kiffin's abilities will only be convinced by W's. The same can be said for potential donors. Kiffin and company are "working their tails off" playing catch-up on the recruiting trail. Why are we making it more difficult?

Maybe they should invite the high powered prospects to the stops on the caravan... You know, kill two birds with one stone... :p

I guess my question is answered in the KNS article just posted. Kiffin, Pearl on a working road trip : Men's Basketball : GoVolsXtra.com

"And even though head coaches aren't allowed by the NCAA to make in-person evaluations during the spring, Kiffin still has been breaking down prospects.

"That's what I really miss right now," Kiffin said. "As fun as this is, I wish I was out recruiting, and I wish I was out evaluating. The evaluation process is so critical."

Kiffin pointed to Southern California's recent run of NFL draftees as proof of the importance of the spring evaluation period.

"Somebody just asked me about all the Southern Cal guys getting drafted. Twenty-two guys in two years," he said. "Well, that's great players, but it's also great development and it's also the research that went into that. It's going to spring games and watching warmups and being there the whole time and going to a practice and not leaving early. The same thing our assistants are going through. I'm doing the best I can, which is getting tapes sent to me." "

I understand what he's saying . . . but this is the tradeoff between being a college head coach and being an NFL guy.

So I guess it's okay for assistants to be out talent evaluating and video taping, but not head coaches? NCAA rules and regulations gurus please clarify.

Assistants can go out into the schools and evaluate prospects by talking with coaches, counselors, administrators, and/or teachers. They cannot have any formal contact with the recruits themselves. All coaches can sit in their offices and breakdown tape all they want.

It really doesn't matter because he cannot meet prospects in person yet. All I know, is I cannot wait for the Big Orange Caravan in Cincinnati next Wednesday. I'm anxious to meet Kiffin for the first time.
