ESPN - List Ranker - Rank 'Em: SEC All-Time Best Team

ESPN's rank'em vote for the best SEC team ever. Three Vols teams are on the ballot.

1938 Vols - went 11-0 including a 17-0 victory over Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl. Outscored opponent 293-16 on the season.

1998 Vols - went 13-0, beat Florida State in the Fiesta Bowl in the first BCS national championship game.

1939 Vols - were undefeated and unscored upon in the regular season but lost to Southern Cal in the Rose Bowl after cross country train trip.

The 96 Florida team and 04 Auburn team are doing really well in that poll. What a joke.

I would think our '50 and '51 teams would be on the list.

I'm sure Bama had 15 different teams listed..

An none of them were as good as the 39 vols. Never heard of a team going a whole season without giving up a point.

And they should......... I think Auburn could've beaten USC that year.I'm not one of those people that lets the media tell him who's best...........ala Florida vs OSU/ Florida ST. vs Tennessee.

The 39 Vols weren't the best team that year, therefore it is hard to have them at the top.

The 2004 Auburn team would have been drilled by USC. They also would have been absolutely demolished by the 98 Vols. They weren't that great. The SEC wasn't that great the year, either.

Not necessarily true. The entire team didn't even travel to the Rose Bowl to play USC that year. Also, those games were basically exhibition contests back then. I don't think you can really penalize a team for losing a game that doesn't matter.

I beg to differ that 04 AU team was nasty they would have beaten USC because they actually had an offense that year when USC and AU played in 03 down in Auburn AU only lost 23-0 because they didn't have an O coordinator once Petrino left but Chizik(sp) has USC number hince he beat them in 05 for the title

Chizik is a defensive coordinator. He did very little to stop USC's offense in 2005.

You want to check again?? he spent what one year in Texas so those were not even his type of players on defense and with his type of players they held usc to 23 points in 04 and in 03 he held them to 21 in LA so yeah AU would have beaten that 05 USC team

I guess that's why Auburn beat Virginia Tech by less than USC did.

If you remember in the VT-USC game VT would have won but got a horrible PI called against them....against AU-VT got a late TD to make the game appear closer then what it really was

I do remember. That's a stretch, however as that PI happened with quite a bit of time left on the clock. Soon after, Reggie Bush took over and VT was powerless to stop him. That defensive line of USC was better than any Auburn faced. They would have gotten pressure on Jason Campbell and forced interceptions. The rest of the defense was good enough to prevent Cadillac and Ronnie Brown from taking over the game. Meanwhile, the Trojan offense would be putting up 40 points.

Auburn had three games it could use as statements for its national title campaign. The last three games of the season were against a crappy Bama team, a Rick Clausen led UT team, and an overrated VT team. They won none of those games impressively.

UF won none of their games impressively last year (and lost a game) and ended up in the NC game...

and won it.

They never put up 40 points on chizik in 2 years how in the world are they just going to put 40 on them?? JC was a 5th year qb who did not make mistakes teams tried and he just didn't do it...I hope your not trying to compare that overrated OU team to AU Auburn would have beaten USC in that game it would have been the 3rd time in 3 years they would have faced each other so both teams knew what to expect...another thing heisman trohpy winner Carson Palmer only put 21 points agaist AU so 40 points is stretch my friend

I like the 1939 Vols team.

They did not give up a touchdown the entire regular season. They had 17 consecutive shutouts from Nov 5, 1938-Oct 12, 1940, A NCAA record which will never be broken.

Last year's Florida team is one of the weakest national champions I can remember. Although I must admit I'm not that old.

The Tennessee teams have all moved up the list some since yesterday. We just need some more Vols fans to cast ballots.

The 98 UT team would beat the UF teams in 96 and 2006 easily. That defense was great!

Silly argument. We beat Cal in 06, more than USC did in 06, so does that mean we were any better then? I agree that USC would have beat Auburn that year, but that argument never gets anywhere.
