An "underground" artist can make plenty of cash with virtually none of the problems of a major label artists. The top of the line guys are always going to be on top. But there is loads of cash in underground rap music.

This is a very true, yet often overlooked point.

I'm from Memphis, and I knew a few underground MCs that made a decent stack off of it well into their 20's. Hell, I knew one guy who damn near put himself through college mostly with just his skills on a mic. And he wasn't even well-known by underground standards.
