Amazingly, there's a mobster themed place in the apartments behind the UT Law School that serves good Italian beef sandwiches and Chicago style dogs.Chicago standards are Geno's, Giordano's, and Pizzeria Uno. Add to that Ranalli's, Rosatti's and Lou Malnati's (my favorite). Basically, they have good pizza everywhere (like BBQ in the South).
Add in a nice Italian Beef sandwich loaded with cheese and marinara (plus giardinera - a hot pepper relish) - damn, that's good eats that you can't find in the South.
I can remember going to Obie's on Elliston back in the days of the flying tomato and getting the cookie sheet pizza. Usually, I was headed to or leaving a show and for some reason I cannot remember how it tasted???DaVinci's is good. I think Obie's was the best in Nashville under the previous ownership, when it was located on Elliston. I have only had it once since it moved to West End, and it was different and not so good.
I don't know if you have been there lately, but the past couple of times I have been there it seems to be going down hill. The best Pizza in Knoxville is Elidios. It is on the corner of Central Avenue and Callahan. As for the best Pizza I have ever had, it has to be Guiseppi's (sp?) in Hilton Head.Big Ed's is an East Tennessee treasure.
It has been about a year and a half since I have been there, so I may have to take the girlfriend and go try it again.Just went to Big Ed's this past Friday and I would have to say it was the best I have ever had there (I have been going there for over 20 years). I would have to say there was about a 2 year slump after Big Ed passed away but there are on top again for sure. Outside of ET I like Memphis Pizza Kitchen Fetta and Pepperoni FTW!
