I've seen this topic in past years but not recently. I was a frequent visitor of the Days Inn before it caught fire and always enjoyed the live band they would have for pre/post games. Since the fire, the band hasn't been there, or at least they hadn't every time I had been there since the fire. Our kids also got into sports about this same time which limited our opportunities to enjoy gamedays on the strip.

Long story short, my wife and I are planning to make several trips to Neyland this year thanks to our boys being in middle school and/or high school and now having the week-ends free (er). What's everyone's opinion for the best place to stay around the strip which would put us in walking distance from pre-game/post game fun. (We don't typically setup a tent and "tailgate" where we cook and everything, but we like to enjoy beverages, music, and such before and after the games. (Typically, we'll grab wings or something on the strip rather than cook underneath a pop-up tent.)

Four Points by Sheraton. Peyton Manning actually owns part of this hotel. It's located basically on campus right next to worlds fair park almost right on the strip. The only knock on it which is actually kind of a good thing is that it's small so it does get sold out, but it's usually not way too busy. The employees there seem to be really friendly too.

Not the Hol Inn Worlds fair. Rooms are expensive and dumpy. Game day atmosphere is nonexistent and after games is worse. Their marketing director should be ashamed. The locale makes for an easy trek, but they have some problems.
Breakfast boofay is all they got going for them.

Thanks for the feedback! This is one we were considering.

What about the Hilton? Does it have a good game day atmosphere?

My personal favorite is the Crowne. It is the most convenient to all of my frequented spots.

Uggh. Now you tell me. This is where we're staying for the Montana game.

Marriott is excellent. Covered walkway to and from coliseum/auditorium where you can catch a bus to the stadium.

Hampton Inn and Suites is newest hotel in downtown area and it also excellent. Close to Market Square and within walking distance of campus.

It's nice. They are just not big on gamedays/weekends from a Vols' fans perspective-so it is possibly better for a Griz fan. You won't be blinded with orange. If you want to interact w/ UT fans just hit the campus early and/or go down to the river. Great location, easy distance from campus, downtown and the riverwalk (Vols Navy).

The further out the better IMO. They tend to be newer and definitely cleaner.

The Holiday Inn is just fine. It's also the cheapest downtown.

It has no game day activities, no after game activities, and one TV in the lobby showing one football game. Rooms on a big game weekend are over $200 and are basic. Yes, it's fine, but so is Sizzler.

My boys , my oldest sons wife and boy(by the way he loved the environment age one,no he didn't go to game), my wife and I had a great time while staying there. Alot of activity here. Plus the next morn got to look out the window and watch a rugby game in the field next door. These days I kinda like the no-nonsense places to stay, plus if you are a priorty club member you can get a free room if reserved enough time prior to game.

The Hilton is great, have stayed there many times. Kinda pricey but worth it. Great game day atmosphere as well.

That's ok. It would be a 5 star in Montana. I'm just a little picky.

Yeah, us backward hicks from Montana (or Seattle, where I live) usually just stay out back in the barn. But I've sure read on that interwebbie thing that the Big City Knoxville has just darn near as good a' hotels as Paris or New York. :hmm:

But seriously, thanks to everyone for the info. I don't generally look for a lot of frills in a hotel, because I don't plan to spend much time in it.

The best hotel is the one that still has availability this close to the season starting. Good luck!

I agree that it is late, but I haven't found one yet which is unavailable. I've actually been surprised at the quantity of hotels which still have rooms available.

I decided on the Hilton. Hopefully, it will be a good, new place for us to stay when we don't stay in Gatlinburg.

We stay at Oakhaven resort in Sevierville. Cabins, very, very nice. Only a 15-20 minute drive to Neyland. I know its off the beaten path, but well worth the short drive.

This is a great spot. I've stayed there and it's in a perfect location. I'm also staying in the Oliver Hotel for the Montana game. It's newly remodeled and is on the Market Square.

That's odd. I didn't find one that was available for the first game when I looked 2 months ago. The Oliver was because it had just reopened.

I just reserved the Hilton for the first game week-end. The only hotel within a couple miles of 17th and Cumberland with no availability for this first game was Four Points. I did my search on hotels.com, but reserved through the actual Hilton website once I determined which hotel we wanted. Maybe there were blocks reserved which recently opened, or maybe I just got lucky. I considered the Oliver but didn't see anyone post about it on here. Does it have a good game day atmosphere?
