Best High School Player Seen

Aaron Opelt. Played Q.B in high school at Fremont Ross ended up at Toledo went up and beat Michigan at the big house.

I had kind of forgotten about Carl Stewart. Who has considered the better prospect between him and Brandon Warren?
Oh definitely Brandon Warren.
Out of HS anyway.
He was 5 star.

Carl was a 3 star i think. Went to Auburn same class as Ronnie Brown and Cadillac Williams haha. Then Rudi Johnson came!
Great FB at Auburn.

Saw the Simpson kid at Westview last season against the best team on their schedule.

Noticed two things:

1) Simpson seemed to throw to a spot and, hit his mark every time where only the receivers could catch it.

2) He had talent surrounding him at RB and WR. Hearing that several have received D1 offers to big time schools.

I saw three amazing athletes:
1. Randy Moss
2. Reggie White
3. By far the most amazing was Terry Vanzant. He played for Franklin County high school in 1978. Watched him return a kickoff for 107 yards against Lincoln County or it might have been Lewisburg. It was so long ago!!!
I was 10 years old Terry’s sr year. My oldest brother played QB on that team. Terry was as good as RB this state has ever seen.

Who are the best High Football players you have watched play in person:

Al Wilson he was playing Safety and was just killing ball carriers. You could just see he was going to be special, speed and furious hits.

Dante Hicky (Spelling?) from Cleveland: saw him play several times and in the KY/TN all-star game. He was electric, played WR and returner but never made it to college because of ???. Best player I've seen in person.

Kelly Holcomb, Chad Henderson and a WR named Grogan on the Lincoln County team in the early 90's-time frame. Kelly would throw a 30-yard dart and you could hear hit the guys in the pads up in the stands. I was surprised Kelly didn't go to a bigger school than MTSU but he had an incredible career. I thought Grogan was the best player on the field, he was a big WR who would catch anything near him and I'm sorry I can't remember his first name, no disrespect intended. I don't think he played college ball anywhere and that was a shame because he was very talented.

Kenny Witherspoon (Spelling) RB I think Stradford High and went to Vandy. He was just smooth and had a Walter Payton type running style, not that he was Walter but just he made moves with no effort, just fun to watch.

I hope I got the names and schools correct. Just my opinion so who is yours?
That would be David Grogan from Lincoln County. My home town.

Kind of surprised with your boro connection that the name Locke did not crop up. Riverdale had a heck of a run. Got to meet Rankin before a LC game when Coach Louis Thompson introduced us right after their team bus arrived long before a game. They seemed to have a lot of respect for each other. Odd he came to Alcoa and I moved 6 miles down the road within months.

I saw all of those Lincoln County guys a lot living there during that period. Pretty sure my aging mind correctly recalls Mr. Grogan being a David. The other names from there for sure would be the Blake brothers (Rickey and ???) in the OL of AU fame, though the most famous Falcon would be Jim Bob Cooter. Wife had migrated from a Jr High to LCHS when he was there. For the life of me I cannot recall the QB that came along later that was excellent. He went juco and then disappeared. Things have changed with the addition of a City high school splitting up the talent. They do well in the lower classifications but times have been hard at LCHS for quite a while.
Are you maybe thinking of Shelby Parker that played quarterback that went Juco?

David Grogan I believe was his name. UT wanted him along with just about everyone else. Not sure what happened .

I'll add:
Ricky Blake RB, Eddie Blake OL, Benny Jennings WR (Jauan's father), Anthony Shelton DB. All at Lincoln County.
Yes they are exceptional players at Lincoln County.

Hickey was incredible. He’d have been a star at UT if he’d made it in.

Franklin High School had a QB named Greg Flye who only played his junior year. I grew up with Greg and he was one of the best natural athletes I’ve ever seen in my life. Ask anyone who grew up in Franklin around that time and they will tell you the same thing. He was All State the one year he played, and some of the plays he made were just jaw dropping. He dropped out of school after that one great season. He was also an unreal basketball and baseball player.

Tito Lee at Brentwood Academy was another great one. He didn’t have the grades for college and ended up committing suicide. Tragic story.

Troy Fleming at BGA was a man amongst boys. Bulking him up and making him a Fullback was a bad move. He should have either remained at Tailback or played LB or even Safety in college. But he carried BGA in high school and led them to wins over more talented teams.

Golden Tate at JPII was another. Saw him rush for about 300 yards one game and I’m not sure anyone ever touched him.

Having played my high school ball in Memphis. I saw Cassius Vaughn, Craig Cooper, Duke Calhoun, Micheal Oher, Greg Hardy, & KJ Wright becuase we played all of them at some point. All of them played in the NFL. The craziest part is the best player I believe, I ever played or watched was Cameron Boga from Memphis East. Not a very big guy at all just a playmaker. Boga & Courtney Madison were probably the hardest 2 QB's to get on the ground in my day playing days. I'm not sure he played college ball at all.

There was a RB named "Punkin" Williams who played for Humboldt back in the 80's. He ran all over us for 2 years. We just could not tackle him. He had speed, he had power and had moves. No idea whatever happened to him.

I never watched a lot of high-school ball but I remember watching Dennis Rogan play once. I think he was five classes behind me but he stood out on the field. Dude was crazy for leaving college early. He had skills that needed refining.

I new David Grogan. I went to Lincoln County and graduated in 1990. He was an absolute beast. He was a D1 level college player even in high school. It was like having a grown man playing kids. Complete waste of talent. He had legendary potential. Couldn't get his act together outside school. Academically he was weak. If I remember correctly, he washed out of community college for grades. I watched him get in a fight on the town square one Saturday night. Picked the guy up and dumped him like a sack of potatoes. It was like a gorilla abusing a toddler.
