Talking about Bobby Bowden and discussing his leagacy made me decided to ask this question. Who do you guys think are the best college football coaches of all time?

I'll go with Bryant as my number 1... Guys like Woody Hayes are also up there.

D-1 or all ?

Bah, here. This is through 2006 by winning percentage.

Non-D1:
*John Gagliardi ............... 58(yrs) 443(w) 120(l) 11(t) .781(%) [Carroll (Mont.) 1949-52, St. John's (Minn.)
1953-06]
* = still coaching, now 461-125-11

D1:
Bear Bryant ............................. 38(yrs) 323(w) 85(l) 17(t) .780(%) (Maryland 1945, Kentucky 1946-53, Texas A&M
1954-57, Alabama 1958-82

It's almost impossible to compare modern coaches with guys who operated before scholarship limits.

Urban Meyer

Philip Fulmer

Rich Rodriguez

Mike Shula

Just a few coming to mind

General Neyland. Has a stadium named after him even....
He isn't the only one...

He did very well, obviously, but I'm more reluctant to mention guys who coached in the 30's and 40's... Just too hard for me to determine how competitive everything was. I think Minnesota had a coach win like 5 national titles in like 8 years during that time period.

Tom Osborne wasn't even the best coach in his own league for a large portion of his career.

Switzer may have been 12-5 against CTO, but the OU teams during the 80's was like watching America's Most Wanted in the wishbone formation.

I still think that you could make a compelling case for Gagliardi (already mentioned) and Larry Kehres (Mount Union).

If we're talking strictly D-1, post WWII, the list would probably include:
Woody Hayes
Bo Schembechler
Tom Osborne
Barry Switzer
Darrell Royal
Bear Bryant
Bobby Bowden
Joe Paterno
Bud Wilkinson
Howard Schnellenberger

There's quite a few who could be on there but lacked either the peak or the longevity of those guys.

I can't include Bo Schembechler on my list... He never won a national title. Paterno and Bowden were great coaches but I'm reluctant to include them because they didn't win many national titles considering how long they have coached.

Paul Roach easy!

To win three conference championships in a state with less than 500k people is simply amazing
