I think if they really want to honor Inky Johnson, there are a lot of better ways to do it than just wearing his number. Sometimes this stuff just gets so dadgum cheesy.

At a player level ... or a team/university level? I think that to make the offer generally means there is a personal relationship there....it is a sign of respect, IMO...and a personal note for the player to remember it can all change on any given play...there are no guarantees.

I like it. Eric Berry is making his way to the top of my list of favorite Vols.

And I respect your opinion/feelings. But what exactly does seeing his number being worn by another player DO for Inky?

It probably means something to him on a personal level...but it probably doesn't do anything FOR him. Do you think that the athletic department failed Inky? I thought that they continued to pay for his education, although he wouldn't be able to play for the team. But, what do you feel would be more appropriate to show our support for players like Inky? Has a scholarship fund been set up in his name yet?

I have no feelings one way or the other concerning the athletic department's treatment of Inky. Every football player knows that the risk of grave injury is present at every practice and every game. I am also not trying to be disrespectful of Eric Berry, but it seems like he could wipe his nose on a Kleenex and hand it to some folks and they would feel honored. I guess I'm just trying to say that a football game should be just that and not a chance to wear your heart on your sleeve or make the crowd go "Awwww, how sweet." Just play the dadgum game and play it well. That should be enough for Inky Johnson and ANY true Vol fan.

i understand what your saying.

but, i don't think Berry is doing this for the notoriety. clearly, Inky has played some sort of role in Berry's life, and Eric would like to show his thanks for it.

Your points about EB are spot on...the guy is quite a good football player...and folks fawn over him because of it.

As for Inky...I don't know....all the players take on that risk, no doubt. No one expects players to honor Inky...just playing the game is enough..but when someone takes pause to remember how lucky they are, and perhaps wear that number to denote that, it's cool to me.

I do see what you mean...we as fans can get a little caught up in things at times. I'm not sure how to extrapolate that to players, though....

I think Eric is saying it's all about honoring Inky, not trying to show himself off. I can't believe you have become so callous, LIO...:eek:hmy:

The way the Vols offense played this season would make St. Francis of Assisi callous.

Berry has to wear inky's number shows class. It is a fallen fellow DB and one who risked it all and left it on the field the day he got hurt.

You go Mr. Berry.

I think it says more about what Inky still means to this team even several years since his injury than about Eric Berry. Even though I think it's a very nice gesture.

If it was me and I saw someone wearing my number to show how much I mean to them I would be extremely humbled and touched.

As an opposing fan one of the saddest things I ever seen was when Inky went down. He was very talented and was fun to watch even if he wasn't on my team.

It was such a fluke play. I think that was what saddened me the most. It didn't look that bad when it first happened.

I do hope him the best in life and have no problem anytime they want to honor him.

Inky misses the game, and maybe this move will make him miss it even more. But when you consider a player of Berry's superb ability choosing to honor another teammate this way, it really sends a good message.

But we all know what happened the last time one player decided to wear a number in honor of another player...

Foster wearing Holbert's number at UCLA...yeah...hope we don't get burned by Wyoming!

Anybody heard how Inky is doing Health wise and Did he graduate yet?

I remember hearing talks of him becoming a GA? Is that still true?
