I was watching the ESPN show on the Miami Hurricanes this past weekend. For some reason they never mentioned the 1986 Sugar Bowl.....

I noticed the same thing. They seemed to refer to every year but that one. I guess they were only wanting to show the good things that happened for them. GBO

The BEST bowl game experience this old man has ever had! I remember the Miami fans meeting us on the street and saying the only vols they had ever heard of were A, E, I, O, and U. Couldn't find one the morning after the game...lol..oh yeah..Acme Oyster Bar and Dixie beer stick in my memory too

Yes I believe ESPN went to the players and asked them about the game, I'm assuming every one of them said "I'm not going to talk about that". I'll get the DVD, I hope they'll at least put it in the bonus features!

Was going to start a thread on that... they skipped right over it without a peep.

Exactly. It's only worth noting because they focused on so many games before and after and the season, especially the bowls. They focused on the 58-7 beating of Notre Dame, that was just one game before the Sugar Bowl. UM won 10 straight before and 11 straight after their beatdown. I get a smile thinking about it though...

That night was GREAT! Second only the the Fiesta in '98.
Ahhhh, the memories. I was blessed to attend both.

If I remember right Penn State was playing OK in the orange bowl. Jimmy Johnson had stated that since they had beat Oklahoma and if Oklahoma beat Penn State, Miami should be considered the National Champs. Never saw Tennessee coming.

We had psyched their fans out before the game even started. We were the rowdiest I've ever seen a fanbase in the week and days preceding the game. By the time gameday had arrived the only Miami fans that came out on Bourbon Street were pushed so far down that they were actually on the part of Bourbon that didn't have Street Lights! They didn't dare come into the mob from the fear of the verbal beatdown we were giving. Even before the game began on the field our own POTSB did their own beatdown of the little Miami "pep" band they brought - they were flat out embarassed by our POTSB. Then the game began and other than that first TD we completely dominated them and I swear the sound inside the Superdome was as loud as any home game I've been.
Incredible experience in 1985-86!

I remember Keith Jackson getting caught dogging out the Vols on satellite. He always acted like someone was performing exploratory rectal surgery on him when he had call anything good that Tennessee did. Even in the 1998 NC game. Wonder why that was?

Because Jackson got his start being Howard Cosell's fluffer and if it was not USC, you were nothing. :eek:lol:

He also used to get all warm and fuzzy over Alabama, Notre Dame, Texas, and Ohio State. Guess he was just a frontrunner, huh?:whistling:

I was watching the 1986 Sugar Bowl on dvd this week in response to espn's showing of The U documentary.

During pre-game festivities, Miami came onto the field first. UT's band then formed the Power T on our side of the field. Miami's players pushed their way through the T and tried to cut it off as the UT players ran through the T. I guess they were trying to intimidate our players. It obviously worked wonders as we laid 35 on their heads. Thug U for sure.

Anyone here from the band remember that episode? That had to be a first.

Secondly, does anyone know if this year both teams will be allowed to do their regular entrance onto the field at the CFA Bowl? In other words, does UT usually run through the T at bowl games?

In the '86 Sugar Bowl, all the announcers could talk about was "Vinny this" and "Testaverde that," while the 'canes were gettin' their hats handed to them by UT.

Poor ol' Vinny was never quite the same after that.

That's when I learned to turn up the radio, turn down the TV.

I still miss John Ward.
