Looks like it’s mostly a reward for a hard worker and consistent performer on the G-League team. They have had that 15th roster spot open since February. Key’s numbers in G League are also solid for a guard contributor if they do end up needing him off the bench: Raptors' latest roster move is merited – but there's a hidden cost behind it

Ironically, consistent role players in G League can make the jump because they fill a similar role to what the main team would need from them.

Makes sense given that context. Just saying he is not likely to make playoff roster/rotation... If they make the playoffs they have a good chance of being playin bound. They have the heat back to back games then Nicks and Nets so they cant take any chances with either game else they drop to 7 or 8 spot and are forced into playing. They have to win 3 of those 4 to stay safe.

Not a knock on him at all just roster and situation sucks. They are stacked with young guards even with Quickley out. Im praying im wrong and he shows out vs the heat.

I don't expect him to see the floor, but it sounds like he would be on their playoff roster. He'll get a good pay day, face time with the main team players, and he'll be useful in practice, especially as they're simulating playoff opponents.

I don't think it proves anything. His offensive ability was never questioned, his ability to defend at that size was in question. Nothing about this run changes that assessment. I'm not sure if he's posted a positive +/- yet, though his team is actively trying to lose so that factors in. He likely wouldn't have gone higher the next year and he got a great contract because Memphis still wanted to please Ja Morant.

I think it proves he should absolutely be on an NBA roster next season.

I don’t think anybody sees him in this ball-heavy role on a win-focused roster. If they saw him as a good fit for a supporting role that would work well for him on an NBA team, but there really aren’t examples out there of players being brought up from the G League to take a central role. As it is I think he’s playing himself into a lead role for a G League team if he’s still playing domestically next year.

I'm not saying as a starter or being a star, but on a roster, 100%.

Not at that many minutes, but teams need backup pgs on their bench and he’s at least shown an ability to perform that should get him a look imo.

He’ll, he could probably start for the rockets right now 😅

Tyreke Key has been waived by the Raptors. Keeping him on the roster and inactive this week paid him over $50k.
