Based on both games last night. If you were Pitt, how would you game plan for us?

Obviously Narduzzi isn’t a dumb enough coach to game plan for us based on last night’s hefty serving of vanilla flavored ice cream with vanilla drizzle on top, but he has plenty of film on us, and now he has game film on his 2022 squad. What’s he thinking right now?

On defense: Pitt’s defense just gave up 190 yards rushing to WVU. And that’s including JT Daniels -23 yards for being a statue. Now they have Small/Wright, and an additional threat with Hooker to run on them. I’m sure they would LOVE to sell out to stop the run, but I think we all know how that would turn out. The only thing that would accomplish would be vastly improving the draft stock of Tillman/Hyatt/Hooker.

My guess: If I’m Pitt, I’m thinking we’re screwed on defense. Maybe bring the house all day long? Hope you can force us into quick-outs and short passes? That seems like the only feasible plan.

On offense: Tennessee’s secondary still has yet to prove it’s worth. They are still susceptible to the deep ball, and receivers can get wide open in space for big gains. Pitt also has Slovis now who showed he can air it out with 308 yards last night. With only 76 rushing yards against WVU, I can’t count on the run game.

My guess: Run a similar game plan as Ball State. Max protect, extra TE’s. Try to sit back and pick our secondary apart. If I’m Pitt I run just enough to keep us honest, hope we can score more than the other guys on big explosive plays.

Anybody see anything different?

As usual, half-time adjustments will be key. If they stack, go to 5-wides out of the gun with quick short passes hoping that some break out down field. Key their defense running and try to "gas" them.

If they spread, play action pass to free LBs over the middle to TE and then screen pass when they start to back up.

It's a dance. Do what they don't.

Defend the wide receiver screen. Those plays always take too long to develop because you are throwing horizontally. Pitts defense is good enough and experienced enough to defend those and maybe jump some routes. That's gotta change quickly

If WVA carved them up we'll do fine.

They love press coverage so Tillman and Linebacker lookin ass Bru McCoy will just throw them dudes out of the way and be running wide open.

I think you’ve got it pegged.

No. They are good. Pitt is talented on both lines. Watching a lot of the replay of their game last night, they are fundamentally sound, big with good depth.

I would not sleep on them at all.

Then why did they give up 190 yards rushing? I just don’t see the Pitt DL hype everyone keeps talking about. One dude averaged like 17 per carry.

And if I were UT, I’d go after the CB’s opposite of #14 Marquise Williams. They have the same issue.

Sure, but the thread discussion is based around “if you were Pitt, how would you game plan tn”. And the answer is 100% to target Burrell.

Pitt on D: I would sell out on the pass If I was Narduzzi. Drop 7 or 8 and Make UT run the football. This should keep the game lower scoring, take away some possessions, and make it about controlling the clock. Then you hope that an untimely turnover lets you win the possession battle and you can maximize your won scoring opportunities.

Pitt on O: THey can rpetty much have carte blanche and run their O. I saw nothing last night that looked like a stout D. Balls Tate (thanks @Enki_Amenra for that one, lol) was able to have a pretty balanced attack, and probably should have scored more than they did, sans the gifted touchback fumble into the endzone. I would expect a better O to have scored at least 35 on UT last night the way they played in the secondary. Balls Tate WRs were open all night.

WVU is in big 12. Do you watch many big 12 offenses?

Of course I do. I’m not sure what point you’re making here, Pitt’s DL either gave up the rushing yards or they didn’t.

It’s like Brad Pitt in Moneyball:

Brad: “Is he a good hitter?”

Scouts: “Oh he’s a great hitter, the ball just explodes off his bat”

Brad (looks at stats): “If he’s a good hitter then why doesn’t he hit good?”
