Barnett on playing in bowl

I have no idea, i'm not a socialist. none of the programs are equal now; none would be equal by paying players. There is no fair solution and there never was. I can't understand why Alabama pulls in 17 National Championships, #1 recruiting classes, etc. What are they doing different than us? Its not fair.

I actually think there is a book about the entire state being involved in the corrupt recruiting etc that surrounds Alabama football.

Ask yourself this. Two players took money one from a coach one from a rival booster. The player that took money from a coach gets a two game the one that took money from a rival booster is suspended for the entire year.

Guess which one plays for Alabama and which doesn't?

Well obviously DB doesn't know nearly as much as some of our fans do... the brilliance we have on this site from a select few is probably to advanced for a guy like DB to understand. I mean it's not like he has an knowledge or anything at risk... right guys?

Where does this culminate? I'm advocating for paying players and I can understand why any athlete would give the middle finger to the NCAA. Pompous much?

I suck at guessing games. I do know AL went through about 5 or 6 HC's to find Saban after the Dubose years. They don't F around. Its perform or sink.

Alabama has a rich football history. They backed the Brinks truck up to Saban's house and now he is the coach. Rich football history with a proven coach paid good money to leave the NFL, it's an easy sell to get top recruits to a program that has a history of winning NCs.

So does Army and ND. There are coaches out there and where did that $100 mil stadium reno money fall from? I would take Rex Ryan and his brother immediately with no stadium reno over the status quo.

Its his opinion and I respect it but in a capitalist society it is disrespectful to not economically compensate these player's for the skills and service they provide to the school's, NCAA, and fan base. You can get an education at a public library and it is not free there either.

I disagree. These young men and women have trained for the opportunity to be a college athlete. Some of them do it because they want to make a living in sports, others do it because it's a way to earn a free (or financially assisted) college education. Football players (for example) are instant celebrities when stepping on campus at Tennessee. They are treated differently by everyone in comparisons to other non athletes. This entitlement stuff is getting old. These young men and women are working hard to get paid playing the sport they love, while also earning an education for their services to their schools athletics. As for the guys not playing in bowl games, they shouldn't be drafted IMO. This opens the door for more and more of these things to happen in the future. They made a commitment and should stick to it. My solution to football would be simple. Lift the nfl ban coming out of high school. If you think you deserve to be paid playing football, don't go to college, go to the combine. If not, go to college, get an education and free training to help you prepare yourself for the next level. That's just the way I see it. One thing I can agree with everyone on is
BEAT NEBRASKA! GO VOLS!

Great thoughts but consider this. I just pulled data from ESPN and the top 40 schools in 2008 generated $3.16B in revenue from all athletics (I assume football accounts for the vast majority of that revenue since the top schools had potent football programs, i.e. AL, TX, OSU, TN, etc). For instance, TN generated $101.8M but paid out less than $10M in tuition for all of its players (IDK, maybe 300 total scholarships) in that same year. I wish I could drill down into the data further to focus only on football but you can easily see that this is big business that does not adequately "economically" reward its primary talent. I would guess somewhere around 40 players help account for the vast majority of that $100M in revenue. I know life isn't fair but really...and we call that a free education.

They are compensated. Attending UT Knoxville is NOT cheap. Besides the cost of the education, room and board, books .... they have access to the training facilities, get to showcase their skills to millions of folks every football weekend etc.

If you pay them - then they pay for all they receive while at the university including the fair market price to use the training facilities, equipment, uniforms, media outlets, transportation costs, etc. They would also probably need to pay an accountant, a manager, a lawyer, etc. to help with all the logistics and legal stuff this would entail.

And why did a comment by Barnett turn into a thread about paying players?

Obviously he has no problem with playing in the bowl game so why should we?

As a Christian I get so sick of bad theology as if God ordains specific injuries whiles sparing others.

I didn't get that from what he said. I understand him saying, he knows God has a plan for him so he's gonna play. He trusts God and if he gets hurt, then he'll go on to whatever God has planned.
