This thought occurred to me yesterday. I was thinking about both Prince and Michael Jackson and what a legacy of music they left us. However what's sad is we never got a great live album from either one of them! What a shame that is. What other bands or artists out there have we not gotten a great live album from?

Another that occurred to me was Guns 'N Roses.

Black Sabbath with Ozzy
Red Hot Chili Peppers

Prince put out a couple of pretty good live dvds and I still have my copy of the Sign 'O' the Times live concert they put out, but that is on VHS so I cannot watch it. One Night Alone is an incredible 3 CD set of live material from the early 2000's, but I do not know if that is still available.

This show from the Dirty Mind tour is awesome.

I forgot about Reunion. That is a good one, but I was thinking about 70's Sabbath. I have a couple of bootlegs from back then that are pretty good quality.

Pulse is a great DBL disc album by Pink Floyd.

How the West Was Won is a 3 disc album of 2 shows in two days in the summer of 72.

Also the BBC sessions have some live tracks and semi-live ones as well.

How the West Was Won is terrific.

Pulse is great, and the show I saw in '94 was fantastic, but a rather key member is missing. I was bummed when Richard Wright died and the reunion I had hoped for no longer could happen.

Do The Beatles have a live album? Because I can't think of one.

There is Live at the BBC which is more like studio/ live.

Probably hard to get a good live recording the way the crowds used to scream the whole time which is one of the reasons they stopped touring. Of course that break was also at the peak of their creativity.

Boston
Def Leppard
Motley Crue
Skid Row
The Doors
Bon Jovi (they have some but none were recorded during their 80's "hey day").

Also, does Madonna have a live album? At least one that is considered iconic?

I have the BBC sessions but I wouldn't call that a "Seminal" live album. Ill have to check out How the West Was Won.

Define "iconic" live album?

Gold? Platinum?

Define "iconic" live album?

Gold? Platinum?

One that is universally celebrated by fans and critics. Examples...

KISS - Alive!
Peter Frampton - Frampton Comes Alive
AC/DC - You Want Blood, You Got It!
Johnny Cash - Live At Folsom Prison
Nirvana - MTV Unplugged
Iron Maiden - Live After Death
Rush - Exit Stage Left
Rolling Stones - Get Your Ya Ya's Out

Agreed BBC Sessions isn't a seminal live album.

I personally like the BBC Session albums though. Hendrix and Bowie both have excellent ones too. The music isn't as processed as a studio recording.

How the West Was Won is excellent. Page said those concerts were at the peak of their creativity.

Guns n' Roses has a live double album.

Live albums generally suck, IMO.
