Bama Upset About Kick Off Times

All they're saying is "If you're gonna put 3/4 OOC games in the first 4 weeks of the year, can you at least put one of them on at night?"

Duke being at 2:30 was ESPN's call and not the SEC's, but that didn't really matter since it was inside. And I get that Bama is not going to get shuffled to the alternate channel any time soon. But there is no pressing reason that Bama-Southern Miss can't get the late SECN slot instead of Arkansas-San Jose St. Neither one is going to draw eyes away from UGA-Notre Dame.
San Jose St might beat Arkansas or at least play it close

Alabama president, AD ‘disappointed’ about Tide’s latest daytime kickoff

Complaining the heat is too much for fans. Seems entitled to me but I'm sure some Bama fans will be around shortly to tell us all how they have been mistreated here.

A lot of teams in conference play afternoon games. This comes across as we are Bama and we shouldn't have to deal with this inconvenience.

Why dont they build a dome and add air conditioning since the heat is such a problem.

Bryant-Denny Dome has a nice ring to it.

Even if there is no pressing reason, so what? Seriously. Literally the only ones complaining about heat and time slots are Bama. Nobody else cares at all. The notion from Byrnes and Saban that Bama is not getting a fair shake is laughable. Straight up laughable. They’ve created this imaginary slight and now everyone else is rolling their eyes.

It’s so laughable that I don’t even believe it. It’s probably really an attempt walk back or change the narrative after Saban ranted against student attendance at the game again.

This whole story is just butthurt from Bama that they aren’t put first in something, anything, for a change and they can’t fathom that happening. It’s the entitlement syndrome gone crazy.

You're acting like Byrne is out there saying "It's not fair!" He's not. He's saying publicly what he's been saying privately for a while: the league keeps putting together a TV schedule that is hurting Bama's bottom line. He's not saying that it hurts Bama on the field. He's saying that the league keeps front loading our OOC games and then schedules kickoff for the hottest part of the day. It's not some crazy, entitled request to say "Could you either space out our OOC games or give us at least one at night?"

Nothing may change, and if it doesn't, then such is life. But Byrne's job is to be an advocate for Bama athletics. That's what he's doing here.

By saying they have had the most of these types of games since 2014 or whatever random timeline he chooses to fit his narrative, he is absolutely saying it isn’t fair.

The fact that literally no else cares or complains about this screams pettiness from Bama, any way you slice it.

Every team gets their TV money, including Bama. And I highly doubt there wasn’t a ticket bought for every seat in BD whether there was someone in it or not.

I fully expect to see Bama have one, at most, 11am game next year though. Saban will get what he wants, no matter how little sense it makes.

I still think this was all an attempt to walk back Saban’s rant at the students and press. Even he changed his story on Sunday and complained about the weather.

Everybody is crying about something nowadays. If people really want something to worry about football wise, look at the slow demise of football from America haters to legitimate injury concerns. Carry on....

My lord the irony in your post.

Literally no one else is complaining because, as Byrne pointed out, literally no one else is dealing with issue to the same extent at Bama.

But LSU used to gripe about this all the time. Because night games at Tiger Stadium are somehow a tradition, the complained that they were playing too many games before dark. As a result, we get LSU vs Georgia Southern and Northwestern St both kicking off at 6:30.

Anybody complaining about afternoon starts in early Sept is 100% right in my book. They're miserable for the fans and dangerous for the players.

If Bama would schedule a higher level G5 school who has had some prior success, they would probably be put in a night time slot. Historically, their 3 OOC home games have been with teams like NMSU, WKU, MTSU, FAU, ULL, ULM, etc. If they would replace one September game with a team like Cincinnati, South Florida, Houston, etc. they would get more interest for these games. Pretty sure these teams would not require a home and home.

Cincy just played at Ohio State. Boise State might even consider it. You don’t even have to do it every year, but you can alternate years just to try to get more interest and therefore early season night slots. It’s all about viewers and the games that are on opposite of other games.

You aren't listening. It's been reported, accurately, that LSU has already played Georgia Southern at home at night. They will play something called a Northwestern State at home at night this Saturday. They have a long history of getting night games in September, regardless of opponent. And when you do the math, so has a number of SEC schools since 2014.

Instead of repeating the argument, why not explain LSU's schedule?

3:30 games are even hotter, so what’s the solution? Everybody play at night? Bottom line is without the noon games there will be games not televised, in which case the whining will get even worse.

I find it funny how this wasn’t even brought up last week. This whole thing started after Saban went on one of his rants about attendance and support and less than 24 hours later Saban and Byrne were talking about the heat and how they are being short changed. If this were a bigger game not a single person would have left the game and nobody would be complaining about the heat.

In all honesty, the attendance was probably a combination of the opponent and the heat, but this wasn’t solely about the weather like Bama is making it out to be.

These afternoon games suck, no doubt, but the game time narrative is a deflection.

If Bama plays a better P5 opponent then the LSU game gets moved to the earlier time slot. Ratings and TV money will bump LSU tradition every time.

That particular rant was way more tame than previous versions. And he repeatedly referenced the heat making life difficult for fans and players. He was critical of the students in particular, but the school has been dealing with that issue for years as, heat or no heat, they have been downright awful at showing up and staying. That's not going to change until the university threatens to ban the greek organizations from football games.

How may P5 games should Bama add every year when their conference rivals are doing exactly the same thing?

According to this weeks TV schedule, 5 SEC teams will be competing with each other for the same evening time slot. Kent St. is playing the barn, Lamar is playing ATM, Something called SEMO is at Missouri. The opponents of these SEC teams don't seem to be struggling to overcome LSU's night game tradition. Bonus points if you know what a SEMO is?

Exactly. The reason they schedule these teams is because the rest of the conference does.

At the same time, nobody is forcing Bama to do it. They can schedule who they want. They aren’t being forced to do anything. Better games will demand better time slots. Or, Bama could give up the TV money and play whoever they want whenever they want. As long as they are scheduling these teams and cashing those checks they should stfu and play when they are told. But let’s not act like they are shackled here.

Well there you have it, it’s a conspiracy against Bama. They haven’t gotten a fair shake compared to the rest of the conference. They are the red headed step child of the SEC.

The amount of bitching and whining from Bama while on top of the mountain is ridiculous.

The squeaky wheel gets the grease. From time to time we have to remind the SEC office who they are working for. In 2010 we had had enough of teams scheduling their bye week ahead of playing us. Bye weeks against Alabama that were remarkably missing from other SEC schedules. The result was that the SEC office put in a rule protecting SEC teams from having more than 3 bye teams in a season. You are welcome.

Actually, that's the problem. Basically any game featuring Bama is considered a "better game." The reality of this argument is that Bama is a victim of its own success. The SEC is going to do what it can to schedule Bama in ways that maximize viewers. It's why Bama is never on the alternate channel, even when playing an FCS opponent. In fact, I think Bama is the only team that's never been on the alternate, although someone may correct me on that. Arkansas vs. SJSU is getting the evening slot on the SECN because the league and ESPN want to pull as few eyes as possible away from UGA-Notre Dame. I get the issue, and I accept the reality of the valuation of media rights. I'm not naive enough to think that there is a simple solution to the issue.
