Going to my first road game this weekend. Headed down Friday afternoon. Basically looking for any and all info regarding Athens from everyones experiences.

How are road games?

Who has been to Athens? I've heard great things about the town itself.

Maybe some good spots to have some cold beverages and food?

Tailgate spots?

Who's going behind enemy lines this weekend!?

GO VOLS!

I plan on making my 8th trip to fido land. I don't ever recall going to their strip, but some of the trips from the 90's are a little blurred. I have always had a good time there.

been there once... in 2000 when they tore down the goal posts on us.

The campus is beautiful, but I went home hating Georgia worse than Florida or Alabama. Grown men trying to bark in your face will do that I guess.

Maybe things are different now, but probably not.

Great college town... Redonkulous traffic getting in and out.

I assume you will be showing your colors. Orange? If so, stay the hell away from Milledge Avenue between Broad and Lumpkin. You're better off parking on the East side of campus, somewhere near the river.

Athens is a nice town, I've been countless times since I lived here. That said, Georgia sucks.

Supposedly there is a place in Athens called Effie's that I heard wondrous things about......but no one seems to know where it is at.

It's not different. Georgia has been my least favorite so far.

Had someone try to urinate on me my first time there. My 2nd trip was better but Dooley was our coach and I think they felt sorry for me.

GO VOLS!

I always stay at Holiday Inn just off campus so I only tailgate around there. I'm no help here.

Their downtown is neat. a lot of bars. porterhouse is good but make a reservation asap. make reservations. walkins are tough to come by.

I go to more road games than home. Being a road fan is fun. don't take anything personally. I've never had a grown man bark at me.

I've had a florida fan wave a blue dildo at me though. that was weird.

their traditions are pretty cool too. I think you'll have a good time.

Going for the first time also! Leaving Friday night to get a little closer and going on in Saturday morning. I'll keep an eye on this post for more info. Looking for recommendations on where to stay after the game. Does not have to be in Athens. Would prob prefer not to be so I don't have to kick any dogs off.

I too, will be making my first trip to Athens. Would love to swing by a Tennessee tailgate if any of you are planning on having a setup. Can't say I know anyone in the area anymore.

Awesome college town. I went in 02, 04, 06, 08 & 2010! Ive tailgated in a few different spots. Yeah, the Holiday Inn has a lot behind it were lots of UT fans. Traffic is THE WORST...that last 2 lane hwy is a nightmare...especially leaving back for Atlanta...be prepared lol

I'm a road warrior as well, go to more roadies than home games. You will love Sanford stadium...top 10 game atmosphere hands down.

Live in Georgia, been to Athens for games and other reasons too numerous to count. Never had an issue with the locals.

Some of my favorites are:
5 Bar on N. Hull
Last Resort Grill on Clayton St.
Branded Butcher on N. Lumpkin

and for late night to soak up some alcohol The Grill on College St.

The Hilton Gardens Inn and the Holiday Inn are best bets for a place to stay. They are right in the thick of things.

Stay with your kind, don't wander around alone. Been once and that was plenty. Way too many guys asking if we wanted to "do something about it". Guy walking in front of us punched the side mirror off a truck with a power T on the back glass and asked if we had a problem. At 12 on 2 I didn't see how we could. Even the students in the student section were fighting each other. Never again for me.

I went to Athens back in 2006.. it was a pretty rough experience honestly. I wouldn't know about any of the bars/restaurants because we were too busy getting the heck out of town haha. There was lots of barking, some flying D cell batteries, lots of spitting in our direction, lots of drunken frat boys wanting to brawl. While we did meet some good people, there were lots of bad ones too.. it was a lot more intense than I thought it would be. I hope you have a better experience than we did..

My advice about staying away from the Greek houses on Milledge is not an indictment of Athens or UGA fans in general. That just happens to be a very rough stretch to pass by if you're an obvious visitor. I've seen many a grown man get beat down on that street after stepping on the wrong patch of grass to challenge an untoward word or cup of beer that slipped out of someone's hand. The post game vibe is generally a lot more friendly.

As for places to stay in Athens, it seems like most of the hotels book up a good year in advance for the big games. Personally, I'd stay in Atlanta and take a Groome shuttle.

There is a parking garage near the holiday inn. Always available parking but beware no drinking in it. You have to walk a block to be able to drink. People set up coolers and sell beer and shots on campus. Should be able to find vol fans to hang out with on your not very long walk to stadium. I love their campus. Just not all the barking in your face. And they hate that "ugly shade of orange". Lol
