College Football Countdown: No. 113 Buffalo

College Football Countdown: No. 113 Buffalo – College Gridiron 365 Blog – Orlando Sentinel

Outlook: Stability and consistency at quarterback will be key for the Bulls this season. Especially considering a younger and inexperienced defense will be called up to stop teams. Tough non-conference games against Pitt, UConn, and Tennessee won’t be easy and conference matchups against Miami, Northern Illinois, and Ohio will present lots of challenges for Buffalo this season.

Montana, Buffalo, MTSU, Vandy, and Kentucky are all in the automatic column. The Vols are playing a 1990's K-State type of schedule this year.

November 9th, 1996.
November 8th, 2008.

There is no such thing as an automatic win. That being said, I do believe our second and third string will see most of the minutes in the second half.

"The defensive line only returns one starter while there are no returning starters in the defensive backfield."....uh-oh.

Our d aught to have some fun too.Looks like they run the spread and arent very good at it....no game is automatic but this one should be ugly.

Wyoming is all on Hambone.

Memphis was simply the worst loss of the Fulmer era. Everybody has at least one.

I should think this will be a fugly, but nonetheless, big win for the Vols.

I understand the logic in what you are saying and yes the announcement of Fulmer's firing effected the outcome of that game, but a team with any sort of pulse and identity and a coach who had a grasp on how to motivate a team could and should have still pulled out a W in that game.

i wish that we could put some wins in an automatic column but with tenn recent history and the team still growing together (including the staff). i just cant put anything in the automatic column....

NOT automatic. Probable, yes, based on history, but definitely not automatic. You who think we can automatically chalk up a W against UK have been spoiled. Lest we not forget that they have almost beaten us several times in the past 6-7 years (caveat: final scores are not always indicative of how the game is played).

I dislike like Hamilton as much as anyone but to say it was his fault is insane. He wasnt out there coaching and Fulmers firing was of his own doing. Poor coachin ghires and terrible recruiting led ti him being gone. It was by far the right decison to fire Fulmer. Our football program was becoming stale and we would be in even worse shape now if he was still here. We definately have the right coach in place to get us right!

The announcement was definitely terribly timed, but lets not kid ourselves. Dearstone should have been able to coach us to a win in that game with the talent we had compared to theirs.

Of course these are automatic wins because CDD has a systematic way of preparing the boys and making sure they don't take any opponent for granted. The best thing that will happen is that the nonconference games will be tough enough to challenge our players and teach them how to perform under stress, but still good wins that will build their confidence.

I seem to remember someone else running through the T that day. He was kinda fat. Oh, and jobless.

The announcement was timed in part so that Fulmer supporters would have a reason to show up to the UK game to give him a proper send-off. Otherwise that game given the weather conditions and UT's record might have set a record for no shows.

The fact Fulmer and staff couldn't rally the team to beat an overmatched Wyoming team is a sad indictment of what Fulmer's staff and leadership had become in the last few years.

As fans we should consider the Buffalo game an automatic win. On the flip side the coaches and players should never consider any game an automatic win. I think with CDD the players won't consider any game automatic and risk another version of the Wyoming debacle.

Get it through your freaking heads, there is no automatic win. Well, that's not true. If a team forfeits a game then it is automatic. Otherwise, you have to show up and play in order to win the game. That's far from being automatic.

Overconfidence, failing to respect an opponent, playing without any real spirit, and being just plain stupid are well-paved roads to losing. We've been beaten by Vanderbilt, Memphis, North Texas State, and Wyoming in times past. If we can't learn from these experiences and enter every game expecting to EARN a victory, we can expect automatic loses. There are no automatic wins beyond an outright forfeiture of a game.
