Austin Rivers commits to DukeEmail Print Comments456 By Paul Biancardi

Shooting guard Austin Rivers, the No. 1-ranked player in the recruiting class of 2011, has committed to Duke, according to his high school coach.

Rivers

Rivers, who at one time was committed to Florida, is a highly sought-after playmaker from Winter Park, Fla. He revealed his college plans Thursday, Winter Park coach David Bailey said.

Rivers broke the news to Kansas coach Bill Self and North Carolina's Roy Williams, the coaches of two of Rivers' top three choices, on Thursday morning. Rivers canceled the remainder of his campus visits, including one he was planning to take to North Carolina this weekend.

"He picked Duke because of [Mike Krzyzewski] and his staff," Bailey said. "There is a ton of tradition at Duke, and it was the best place for him from a basketball and academic standpoint."

Rivers' father, Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers, said Thursday that his son's commitment has not been finalized.

"He's leaning [toward Duke] and most likely he'll commit in the next couple days," Rivers said. "But it's not official, yet. I'll wait and let him do it."

The 6-foot-4, 189-pound Rivers could have an immediate impact once he gets to Cameron in Duke's up-tempo, fast-breaking style of play. He is a prolific scorer, has range out to 28 feet and an excellent mid-range game. He uses the jab-step as well as seasoned pros, can finish through contact when attacking the basket and has the best NBA-level floater over bigs of any player in the high school or college ranks.

When teams adjust to try to stop Rivers, he is able to easily convert into a playmaker for his teammates using his vision and passing skills.

Duke already has the No. 7-ranked class in the country, led by ESPNU 100 shooting guard Michael Gbinije (Chester, Va./Benedictine), but by landing Rivers the Blue Devils are sure to at least jump into the top five.

nope^

sucks for us tho

Yeah, considering there have been several voices outing coach K for continiously contacting and enticing the kid even while verbally committed to UF. I was under the impression that guys like him didn't do stuff like that. But, ESPN isn't covering it so it obviously didn't happen.

Questioning K's recruiting practices? Really? A UK fan questioning how Duke recruits? Really? Not even the biggest UNC fan in the world would accuse K of questionable recruiting, but a UK fan who has the sleaziest head coach in College Basketball does. Unbelievable.

this!!!

why all the hate for DUKE? especially on this board that keeps begging for the football team to only recruit "high character" players.
that is exactly what DUKE does and people on here hate them. dont get it. what did DUKE ever do to TN?

I don't see how it's a sham. Rivals and Espn have him #1 and Scout has him #2. He looks impressive so I don't know where this is coming from.

Unfortunately, you completely miss the point of discussing college sports on a message board.

Austin Rivers is the best player high school senior in the country and he repeatedly showed it as the US team's leader in international play this summer. He has incredible shooting range, scoring ability and unbelievable feel for the game. Coach K didn't do anything improper recruiting wise, Florida signed Kenny Boynton and Rivers does not want to split time with him. If Duke got Boynton instead of UF (Boynton's other top school), then Rivers would probably be playing for UF.

For all the haters, this kid completely outplayed Brandon Knight when their HS teams faced off.

Almost as awesome as your horrendous use of the quote function.

Yes you are correct I did not master the quote function very well on my Iphone last night. Usually a "stump" or someone who doesn't understand how a message board works has a hard time. At the same time you have yet to defend your comment on how Duke got Austin Rivers to commit or say anything to defend your coach. Most likely because you realized how stupid your comment was after you re-read it. You have not posted anything of substance in this thread. So I'm going to go there...

That last picture was taken after the 25th consecutive victory over the Wildcats. Amazing how a "stump" figured how to post some pictures. I hope you enjoy them.

I don't get into mud throwing contests with people who have the mentality of a 4th grader, taking the time to post pictures that ultimately make them look like an immature kid.

Also, you have made the mistake of thinking that I give a damn what you say or think. Let me strengthen the notion that I don't, by saying..... I really don't.

So go ahead and post something back concerning a football losing streak that I don't care about, or something about our coach whom I don't know personally and could care less about either way. I don't have to defend anyone from anything other than myself, much less from you.

I'm off to get in 9 holes, have fun with it.

RDU- Hardwood_fanatic is a well respected KY fan on these boards who really never talks trash or anything. No need to get into a mud slinging match with him.
