I lost a so-called "friend" that day. He said he was a Penn State fan but when he and his wife came over to watch the game he said he was a closet Auburn fan. He gave me a lot of flack as we went into halftime down 16-3... several drinks later when we went ahead I let him have it.

He and his wife got up and left. Never spoke to them again.

Don't come into my house with that crap. Go Vols!

It was close and at the time I was mad that we didn't play our best, but looking back after living the past 10 years - it was a freaking SEC Title! I was so spoiled as a fan back in those days.

Leonard Little going Full Beast Mode on the Barn's O-Line. I love working from home some days.

Well, at least you have your priorities straight.

Can't believe this a thread today. This is my first day out and about after two solid days in bed with strep virus. Locked in a room in bed with nothing but my phone, I've had the chance to watch several Vol games on YouTube. This one, UGA 04', Miami 03', and UK 97'.

I was shocked to watch all those players on the screen play after play. What Phil built in those days was pretty impressive. 6 turnovers and we still win the SECCG. Unbelievable really.

We tried to give them that game! Only player for Auburn that I recall is Damian Craig who make the squad for the Panthers.

I remember this game well but, I didn't remember this. I'm sure I blocked it from my memory for obvious reasons. What a joke. The commentators even discuss it near the end of the game.

Takeo Spikes played in the NFL for a while.

I still remember that game. The dome got loud when Nash was running down the sideline.

One other thing I remember is seeing Manning and Teague walk into lulu's later that night with cigars. We all started singing rocky top very loud

We not only had 6 turnovers (Terry Fair fumbled 2 punts), we also dropped passes throughout the 1st half and had an extra point blocked and returned the other way for 2. If we play a clean game that night, we beat the Barn by 30 points.

Do we know why the team came out so flat? They were playing for the teams first SEC title since the championship game was formed in '92. You would think they would have been fired up. At least they got it done, but it would be interesting to hear why they had so many turnovers and drops.

Every time I watch that game replayed, I still expect us to throw it away at the end. Just my oldtimers kicking in.

Losing that may have been worse than LSU 2001. Maybe.

I don't think they were "flat" or inspired. I just looked more like we had saved up one stupid play in each of the 11 previous games to release on the world in one single game.

Like someone said above, it wasn't just turnovers (which were more than enough to lose), but dropped balls, missed assignments etc. All that added up to a guaranteed loss, but ... somehow. :-o

I remember some UN players making fun of our guys after that game b/c they watched the SECCG wondering if UT would be their matchup. Unfortunately, they were beastly and we used the same strategy as we did against AU. Didn't work by a long shot.

When we got the PAT blocked and they ran it back for 2, I was sure I had entered a circle of hell.

6 fumbles, 2 picks and gets a PAT blocked and run back... insane.

How we didn't beat Florida that year is still a mystery.

You even left out Cedrick Wilson WR and David Martin WR. Cedrick played for San Francisco from 2001-04 and Pittsburgh 2005-07. He helped Pittsburgh win Super Bowl XL vs Seattle. Cedrick was a freshman in '97 but still saw a lot of action. He let a pass bounce off his face that night as I recall, when he was wide open. David Martin had an even longer career with the Packers 2001-06, Dolphins 2007-09 and the Bills 2010-11.

Also left out Shawn Bryson FB who had a nice career with Detroit. Damn that team was loaded.

It's my understanding that Al Wilson inspired the team at halftime. What an asset to the program.

We could have whipped the Huskers to win the 1st bowl coalition championship, needed to hit their QB early and often when he was running that option.

The good ole days are soon to return, this year.

Jump higher Vols.

This, ALL DAY. I am jealous of UT fans and students who were in their prime 18-35 years old during the "Glory Years." I was 11 when UT won the Natty and couldn't really enjoy it like I could if I was an adult. Either way I guess I should be thankful that I was at least able to remember most years since about 94'. These millennial UT fans have basically only seen arguably the worst years in UT football history.
