Attrition

You'll see at least four more scholarship guys jump before or after spring practice. I don't think it's fair to speculate on who those guys are, but the intensity and expectations of this staff will not be for everyone.

I believe this.
It seems Jones instilled a culture of pampered favoritism for some players. I don't think these players will be able to cope with the shock coming their way.

Even if Jauan Jennings gets a red-shirt for this season, he will declare for the draft after the 2018 season. I don't like to see a player leave for any reason, so I won't play the "should transfer" game. I do wonder about TK2 though. It doesn't sound good.

The practical answer is that it behooves any new coach to recruit and retain as many of the current players as possible because of the recruiting rules. The class size limitations mean that if you get behind on numbers in your roster, you cannot catch up easily. To make that even worse, guys leaving before getting their degrees hurts your academic standing and could result in less scholarships.

Anyone that watched Jumper continue to start knows this. Jumper could make play every now and again but more times than not he missed making the play. I don't remember what point of the season it was but there was statistic showing Jumper lead the conference in missed tackles yet he continued to get the start over Bituli. Bituli was one of the top in the conference at making the tackle. A player who leads in missed tackles starting over someone who leads in successful tackling screams playing favorites. I don't care if he was better at lining up the defense, if be cannot make the plays then he shouldn't have been the guy getting the start.

CJP seems to place a big, big emphasis on athleticism. It should seem obvious, but at times under Jones, there were guys on the field that just didn't have the size, speed and natural athleticism to compete with the opposition. Jones seemed to have an affection for the "Rudy" types. If you're a Rudy, you probably won't be getting much PT under Pruitt.

There’s always 5-10 players that leave under each coaching change for whatever reason they don’t feel like they’re going to get a fair shake maybe they don’t fit the system ...

.......or the coaches don't recognize my talent.

Two part question, all speculation of course. You will be graded.

Which rising juniors would you say are the most likely to, or have the best potential to declare early after the 2018 season?

Which current players would you say are most likely to either be encouraged to look for opportunities elsewhere, or otherwise decide to transfer on their own?

Basically asking for two reasons:

1. Basic team construction/needs for the 2019 class.
2. Thinking 2018 will be an improved year - foundation for the future. Hoping 2019 could be a potential 10+ win year where we start to make noise.

I will not say. I don't like naming names on those topics. Suffice it to say I believe those who have declared early will not be picked high enough to justify the move. JMO.

As to current players transferring, I am sure some will, both before and after spring practice, and there may be a number of PWOs to come in.

Of course 2018 will be improved. Last year was the worst we ever had. If next year turns out worse, any level of fan ugliness we have seen before will pale in comparison. Oh some will call for patience, but they won't get much. So they really need to maximize the final few pieces of the recruiting class and get this train rolling.

Again, JMO. I believe fans expect instant improvement from last season's debacle. If not, there may even be people wishing we had gotten Schiano. With Tennessee fans, anything is possible.

Hell, I won't sweat any player currently on the roster transferring or going pro. Go for it.

Agreed. If you cannot win a single conference game we miss any of them why again??? We can start a bunch of 8th grade kids and lose every conference game.

If you've got a 4-8 record and you don't want to work, best you go now.

I think you'll see several LBs simply because they don't fit the profile of what Pruitt will be looking for.

When Spurrier arrived at USC he had to clean house. The team was full of pot smoking players with bad attitudes. He realized that it was a bad team so he wasn't going to win with that roster anyway.

In my opinion ... no need to go there. Why start naming names of guys who should be run off? We need everybody right now. Leave everything else up to the coaches.

This. The recruiting rules have changed. A coach cannot turn over the players that fast anymore. Gone are the days of signing 30+ two years in a row to realign to a defense or offense shift.

If 40 leave, guess what, UT still only gets to sign 25 not 40. We'll end up with a team supported by walk ons or true freshman who are not ready physically to play.

So when UT loses all of them again next year with Pruitt recruits - what is going to be the excuse?

Before the coaching change, folks expected 2018 to be like 2016. Those folks still believe the talent is there, but the injuries were the biggest issue.

Then there are folks that believe Pruitt can do no wrong. They have the "Bama" stars in their eyes. So they are all on board with current players leaving and being replaced.

Both will become very upset very quickly if things so south next year.

Some will defend even another 4-8 season (or 3-7 if we can't beat WVU) and blame the former coach. Others will start the fire Pruitt chant if that happens.

I think the saving grace will be how the defense plays. That is Pruitt's strength. If the defense does not show marked improvement - he will be in trouble half way through his first year.

I am realistically not expecting much this year. We have some good players but the team as a whole has lots of gaps that freshmen aren't going to fill (OL, DL for two). Still, 3-7 or 4-8 and I am concerned about Pruitt. 5, i can understand. 6 wins I am happy with. Better than that and we overachieved, imo.
It is year 2 and 3 where I expect us to start competing for SEC East. I am tired of excuses.

There is absolutely enough returning talent on this team to make a bowl. That's really all I'm expecting in Pruitt's first season. Some don't like hearing this but injuries tore our team up the last couple of years. Now it can be debated as to whether it was bad luck or systemic. Either way, injuries did play a role in our season going south last year and the disappointment of 2016.

If we can somehow avoid a 3rd straight year of mass injuries and just win the games we are supposed to win, we should be able to make a bowl no problem.
