Athlon sports ranks Pruitt 13th among SEC coaches

They have no idea how he will do as a head coach.

There is zero "game film" of him as an SEC head coach.

But if you go on his body of work as an assistant ... how is that anything but good?

Yet, this fallacy crops up frequently in college football: unknown ... must equal bad.

Not really true.

The record is mixed in sports psychology. Some studies show that a positive mind set (believing in your team and its abilities) helps teams perform better. Others show that too much pressure, even positive pressure, can lead to performance anxiety--one study in particular, concerning golfers, showed that the more money there was riding on a particular shot, the less likely the player was to make the shot.

So that's a mixed bag, you could argue it either way.

But it is a statistical fact that the higher your ranking in week X, the higher your potential ranking in week X+1. In other words, you are better off being ranked as highly as possible early on, if your goal is to be highly ranked later, even to the end of the season.

So no, it's not really true that "the lower they rank us the better."

I would agree with you, if we were talking about the polls and our initial team ranking. But they are just talking about the coach.

Yeah. Good point. When it comes to "coach rankings," it truly is meaningless.

On the other hand, I'm sure CJP is reading that Athlon write-up and/or this thread, and we want him to have great confidence, so it's better if...nah, even tongue-in-cheek, I can't say that like I mean it. You're right, it totally doesn't matter. :)

Im cool with it. I hope were ranked last in every type of preseason ranking. We already have the 4-8 record from last year. It's gonna hurt a lot more when we beat people this year.

I just have a feeling he will be confident. :loco:

Surely we can ALL agree this stuff is silly at best. I refer you to last years preseason basketball rankings. These guys are paid to write articles (my wife did it for untold years) and there comes a time when you throw up your hands and say “I got nothing and it goes to print tomorrow morning. I KNOW over these multiple decades there were times she wasn’t pleased with the quality or accuracy of the content. It’s called fill fluff and the causal reader never knows it.... I would submit that’s EXACTLY what this piece is.

They're merely guesses based on the returning talent as compared to the previous season.

Bottom line, for the most part, it's worthless. Yes, you can almost safely assume Bama and UGA will be good. Other than that you can assume Auburn will be good. After that, who the freak knows?

It's stupid to rank Pruitt as a head coach before he coaches his first game.

Correct. The designation for Pruitt should be NR/Not Rated/Not Ranked. It's like a person being promoted in the corporate world and 8 weeks later annual evaluations are required. The only fair thing due to being so new on the job is to give the individual an NR.

So Moorehead doesnt have anywhere near the credentials of Pruitt, is also a first year HC and is somehow ranked above guys that are proven HC in the SEC? This is a complete joke.

Not sure if serious?

Moorhead took over a 1-10 team, had them in the playoffs in two years and had them in the playoffs for 3 of 4 years including 11-1 conference record. Had a 38-13 HC record inheriting a 1-10 team.

I rank Athlon Sports 13th among sports media sources. So, there.

Actually there are sites that rank them now for accuracy, Athlon has been #1. Surprisingly, Phil Steele was around 8th. Dude writes a dictionary and most thorough edition there is. PLENTY of bathroom time can be absorbing football knowledge. You will know Everything you want to know about Air Force. :)

I see it as we have already improved three spots from last year on the strength of the Spring game and some recruiting.
