Not really true.
The record is mixed in sports psychology. Some studies show that a positive mind set (believing in your team and its abilities) helps teams perform better. Others show that too much pressure, even positive pressure, can lead to performance anxiety--one study in particular, concerning golfers, showed that the more money there was riding on a particular shot, the less likely the player was to make the shot.
So that's a mixed bag, you could argue it either way.
But it is a statistical fact that the higher your ranking in week X, the higher your potential ranking in week X+1. In other words, you are better off being ranked as highly as possible early on, if your goal is to be highly ranked later, even to the end of the season.
So no, it's not really true that "the lower they rank us the better."
I would agree with you, if we were talking about the polls and our initial team ranking. But they are just talking about the coach.
Yeah. Good point. When it comes to "coach rankings," it truly is meaningless.
On the other hand, I'm sure CJP is reading that Athlon write-up and/or this thread, and we want him to have great confidence, so it's better if...nah, even tongue-in-cheek, I can't say that like I mean it. You're right, it totally doesn't matter.![]()
Surely we can ALL agree this stuff is silly at best. I refer you to last years preseason basketball rankings. These guys are paid to write articles (my wife did it for untold years) and there comes a time when you throw up your hands and say I got nothing and it goes to print tomorrow morning. I KNOW over these multiple decades there were times she wasnt pleased with the quality or accuracy of the content. Its called fill fluff and the causal reader never knows it.... I would submit thats EXACTLY what this piece is.
It's stupid to rank Pruitt as a head coach before he coaches his first game.
So Moorehead doesnt have anywhere near the credentials of Pruitt, is also a first year HC and is somehow ranked above guys that are proven HC in the SEC? This is a complete joke.
I rank Athlon Sports 13th among sports media sources. So, there.
