Take it as you will. However, for an athletic program that boasts two of the largest facilities, respective to their sports, I would say that taking in less profit than 4 out of 11 other schools (could be 5, however, UK's financials are not to be found on the site) is pretty unacceptable.

How these numbers are calculated varies widely. They publish the numbers according to their own agendas.

It's like a professional team franchise saying they are losing money by not reporting all of their income sources.

Shouldn't they all just break even. Why do they need to turn a profit? Does that profit go back into the general fund of the university?

I think you need profit to plan for future stadium upgrades, new facilities, coaching raises, etc. That number makes me think UT has 3 mil+ this year to invest in new facilities, raises for coaches salaries. That number seems very low.

Most of our facilities projects are from donations. Ex: the entirety of the Neyland project is from private funds, as is the basketball practice pavilion. The soccer stadium and softball stadium are all privately donated, too, I believe.

Also, unlike many schools, UT takes care of things like cheerleaders, band and what not VERY well. Almost $900,000 last year alone. Not many other schools care about that stuff. They also give a ton of money to general scholarships for the rest of the University...not sure how much the other schools give for that stuff.

something is fishy in those numbers - with UGA that far on top and UF winning 2 championships in one year...something is not right.

Revenue would be more interesting to see than profits. I would think Florida's revenue should be very high this year with the royalities form all those National Championship souveniers.

i really would like to see how each different university calculates this. i'm sure there are quite a lot of different variables.

Considering they are all audited by the Department of Education (through the use of the GAO), I doubt there are as many variables as all of your hopes are clinging to.

i doubt you're as right as you want to believe. they can still come up with other facts and figures to throw in or leave out, claiming it's not part of the athletic budget.

But certainly there are some variables in play. UGA being so much more profitable than anyone else strikes me more than the position UT sits in.

Show me a link supporting this.

i can't find it now, but i've read and heard UGA has been on top the past few years. i just want to know how it's decided between each school.

Still ignoring the self-sufficient AD's I see. The only other teams I can find evidence of being like UT are LSU and UK (in the SEC).

Did you also add in the money UT was forced to pay out for ex-bball coaches?

I am not ignoring anything. I am simply providing what is on the financial audits conducted by the GAO on behalf of the Department of Education.

I am also not desperately running around looking for any inkling of hope that we are a more profitable program than what is displayed.

We have two of the largest facilities in college sports, yet we turn a very meager profit. Take it as you will.

My point is you are ignoring many factors to make your arguments seem valid. Thank you Al Gore.

Only if you believe that because a program is subsidized, that money would not show up in their financials. Wherever the money is coming from, it will still show up when it is used as an expense.-->I guess this knowledge just comes from the Accounting background I have. You are welcome that I let you in on it.

you've also pointed out that getting through accounting was very difficult, so you must've totally whiffed on putting revenues and expenses in other places.
