At the risk of...

The biggest difference in their potential for sustained success lies in UNC's cultural obsession with basketball and the U's obsession with football, imo. UNC's culture will be an obstacle as they have no desire to become known for the prowess in football. Butch Davis will have to win at the level Mack Brown did before that becomes blatantly obvious to him. Additionally, I'm not convinced that the Carolina that feeds the UNC program is on par with the South Florida talent that feeds the U.

In the short term, UNC appears to be on track to demonstrate that reality.

Whether Shannon can get the U back is to be seen, but I agree that they will be back.

It is an interesting debate. Davis appears to be the better coach, but Shannon has the better infrastructure. Put Davis back at the U and the debate would be over. And, Randy Shannon may well prove his worth as a coach. He's doing a lot of things right, imo.
i'll put it this way, if i'm setting up a retirement fund i'll buy Miami stock. if i'm looking for quick cash, i'll buy UNC's today.

i'll give you that it at least made them take notice of Tennessee again. but i can't get myself to believe that this all the sudden made them better than they already were.

but let's assume what you say is accurate. all th sudden FL now has resolved itself to really beat us down.

what if you don't? i'm not a moral victory person. but given all the scuttle going on about how bad it's really going to be now, what happens if you find yourself in a real football game in the 4th qtr?

i'll tell you what i'm now starting to buy in to, is that Kiffin can come away a winner even if he loses a close one. If you blow us out, you were supposed to, so what? and now with all this drama, you're now really going to kill us.

i still don't see a legit football reason, especially matching up our offense against your defense, for us to be in the game.

but one has to wonder what the pucker factor will be if it's a 24-20ish game going in to the 4th qtr....

Please let that happen!

Tebow to Berry for six would be my finish.

it's a slippery slope i think to start down that road. in the end, if we lose, that'll be 5 in a row, and it'll still suck out loud. and florida will still have all it's goals out in front of them....which is why i'm not a moral victory person. if you win, you win.

but for this single year, for Tennessee and the state of this program right now, after listening and hearing and reading all the drama, i can see where losing a close game in the Swamp wouldn't be the end all be all for this season or the future for Tennessee under Kiffin.

if we get killed, then all we know is that the satus quo hasn't changed.....yet.

The risk for the Gators is so much higher. They have a tremendous downside. Lose to Kiffin and Company with the extraordinary talent superiority the Gators have and we own Meyer. Kiffin's post game comments would become Vol folklore. :dance2:

On the other hand, they have to beat us by more than 4 touchdowns (24 points) to be outside the range of what most people expect. Anything less and it indicates Kiffin and Company have narrowed the gap (versus 2008) based on their superior development of players (I might add...with less time to do it than Urban's staff has exhausted) and/or a better mastery of the game.

With all of Urban's smack talking, he's put his team in a situation in which they must win by an extreme margin or it will be seen as a failure.

see this is what i'm talking about...i don't want to start pigeon holing what an acceptable margin would be for us to have warm fuzzies coming out of that game, or for that matter start the belief that we could win.

we aren't going to win. they are a lot better than us right now. my whole stance with this is simply in the what if. we know what the story line will be heading in to that game already. how the game plays out will reveal the outcome of it. trying to do that now is pointless and will likely result in utter disappointment.

once you've gotten your head around "it's ok to lose if it's by this margin or less" you've already lost.

Yep.. I agree with all this logic, but I wouldn't be me if I didn't take you down that 'slippery slope' you mentioned. :hi:

plus, even if it is a close game and FL wins, do you think Meyer and co. will really be disappointed? they'll still be able to deflect any questions with "we won, we've won 5 in a row, and we can still win the SEC and national title".

remember it's not so much about FL reaction after a close game as much as it is perception of tennessee after that game. it will either be "they've still got a ways to go, but if this is any indication, it's headed in the right direction" or simply "they've still got a ways to go".

and i wouldn't be me if i didn't put all you homers back on the straight and narrow path.:good!:

When is the last time UNC had a winning record in conference? Bury your money in the backyard, it's safer there.

Without a question this is shaping up to be a game where UF has everything to lose. Since rankings are based on emotions, anything other than a beatdown will be viewed as an underachievement.

I like that we're hearing some mouthing from the gator players, but nothing from the Vols. This is setting up perfectly for the "nobody believes in you but the people in this room, you've got no respect, it's us against the world" pre-game speach from the coaching staff. I like it.

me too. but with this disclaimer...SPurrier did his talking after winning, and winning, and winning....which made it all worse.

while this is great right now, the butt end of those jokes comes right back around if Kiffin flames out in less than 5 years.

i don't think that will happen, and i definitely dont' want it to, but i know that's a possibility as i sit here today.

Not always true. OBC made the "free shoes university" crack while mired in a 4 or 5 game losing streak to FSU.
