Article: The Search for A Big Play Receiver

Good read. There is definitely potential with Malone and PW to be big time stars, and josh is as reliable as any imo. Just a little improvement in the passing game, and we're scary on offense.

Agreed, Josh Smith is good, but for a deep threat we need PW and/or JM to step up.

Watched Mizzou and N. TX games recently. Both gave me a really nasty feeling about our upcoming season. We really need improvement compared to the each of those two in the passing game.

I've defended Smith, but youre right. The good thing is that if JM or PW are hot and the defense gives special attention to shut him/them down, Smith will be that guy that will consistently make the DC and fans pull their hair out with him getting key grabs. Croom (and hopefully Wolf!) will do the same if he is really coming along like they say.

Not sure where the Josh Smith love on this board comes from. He was bad in 2013. Started 2014 off well but was injured and redshirted. In 2015 he averaged less than 2 catches a game catching 23 passes all season for 307 yards 2 TDs. The most yards he's had in a game is 58 in 2014 with Worley as QB. For some reason Dobbs doesn't trust him enough to target him more than a few times a game.

Croom is a deep threat from the TE position and especially if opponents try to cover him with a LB.

I don't understand. Both Mizzou and North Texas have passing games better than ours and we need to get better so that we can compare to those two? Apologies, I must be misunderstanding.

I think he's saying our passing game this coming season needs to improve over our passing game in those 2 specific games from last season.

Not sure where the dislike comes from either. IMO he has the best hands on team and I also think Dobbs has a good bit of trust in him to get open and catch the ball. I've also read that they have improved chemistry this fall.

I think he is saying that in those two games our passing game was so poor that if that happens again this year we will not have a special year.

Because you delusionally think there were much better options? The dude was very reliable last year and made all the grabs. He has been reported as being improved and one of the best WRs. Who are you high on, Malone wok has yet to be consistent? Williams who has only been here a year and didn't dominate? No one is predicting him to be the best WR or the main target not even me. Yet he is the guy who is the most proven reliable guy to go to in clutch situations. Its ridiculous to think Dobbs didn't throw him the ball because he didn't trust him. Do you remember how many times he targeted Jennings the 1st few games and Jennings didn't perform? I guess Dobbs just doeant know who to throw to? 😒

If you look to see where kids went to high school on the UT football roster if they happen to be from East Tennessee and they play, you sometimes see what we read and hear of Josh. Good kid, happy he's here, don't want nothing but good things for him, but he gets way more love than a youngster who hasn't done a lot yet. Hopefully he will and becomes an AA.

Are you sure, think about what you just said, please?

His freshman year he was touted by coaches as having the best hands on the team. His first year wasn't stellar but he was also in the game trying to catch with a broken hand. He is as reliable as they come.

I've been thinking about this too. Croom could POTENTIALLY be a huge piece of our offense this season and open up a lot of other things. Not many TEs have the type of ability as him. If he can take the top off a defense from the TE position then that adds a ton to our offense. This play shows his athletic potential.

It could have something to do with the UGA game. Without that catch and score we don't win that game. Also, not to make a racist comment or anything but it seems everyone likes rooting for the small white receiver for some reason.

Not saying it was racist because I agree that seems to be the cause for some posters, but I'd say 98% of fans root for a winner. You make a wild catch and run it in for a score in a game that we all but gave away in the first quarter and some odd minute and you are aces in my book. I dont give a dam what color your skin is or what you do from that point forward.

Point in case: Kelly Washington is still my second favorite receiver for his record setting game in 2001. First is Peerless Price and third is Marquez North. People remember what you do in winning time. And I was in second grade when Peerless sealed that game.

P.S. D Goodrich is my favorite db :dance2: sorry Berry

Should be big having him at TE too since most of Dobbs' best throws have been working the middle of the field. And Croom was one of the guys Dobbs really liked to go to in 2014.

Josh is talented and will certainly contribute but I see him as a secondary, even tertiary target this year again, especially with the expected emergence of PWill

As season goes on Byrd and Brandon Johnson will contribute too

He was starting to come on in 2014 but was derailed with the injury. 2015, our passing game was abysmal so there shouldn't be any hate there.
