I hate the swamp creatures as much as anyone, but found some interesting notes in this article recounting their search.

The Coaching Search That Remade Florida Football

For example:

On Friday, the day after Mississippi State lost to Ole Miss in the Egg Bowl on Thanksgiving, Stricklin called Mullen. With the firing of Butch Jones, Tennessee’s job had opened as well and the Volunteers were after Mullen. Stricklin delivered a message to the coach. Don’t take the Tennessee job yet. Wait on us. I’ll know more tomorrow.

In an interview last week, (Chip) Kelly acknowledges that he had an opportunity to coach in the SEC, but that it wasn’t the right fit. He chose UCLA, in part, because it is the No. 1 public university in the country. He wanted to coach players serious about both “books and ball,” he says. (Guess he thinks UF is a crap school, haha!)

They describe the interview with (Scott) Frost as unimpressive, and they emerged with a similar feeling: He’s not ready for this big of a job.(Frost said he'd call them back and never did).

Through intermediaries, Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy suggested he’d be interested (heard that one before...). Gundy was known to flirt with jobs only to remain at Oklahoma State with a hefty raise, and Stricklin knew this. He spoke to Gundy by phone twice. He didn’t take it any further.

I'm just gonna go on record and say that I know that we hired Pruitt, and I am STILL glad that we didn't hire Mullen.

Yeah, I think Mullen is a dbag, but I'd feel a lot better about missing out on him if we were winning more.

Since we don’t see eye to eye regularly I’ll go ahead and ask: being a gator fan what is it that you think holds Mullen back from taking the next step?

Spurrier was goofy and corny at times too, but he was infinitely more self-aware than Mullen.

Mullen is also loyal to a fault when it comes to his staff. Outside of Brewster we’ve got a bunch of mediocre recruiters, and our player development on defense isn’t anywhere near what it used to be.

This...He's a really good coach, his coaching and player development are not, and really haven't been, an issue...He's just loyal to an absolute fault with players and staff...He's got that old school, loyal to my staff/loyal to my upperclassmen regardless of talent thing going, and it's EXTREMELY frustrating to a good portion of the fanbase...It should also be noted he's not Saban on the recruiting trail, but I feel like he's actually a decent recruiter and it's less of an issue than the other stuff.

Mebbe this will be a callback to reference when the usuals go “and WE didn’t want him!” He was always going to wait for the Gators job…and did.

That’s interesting that it fell off that quickly. I seem to remember it wasn’t to long ago Florida would sleep walk into talent on defense.

As far as Mullen leaving I’ll believe it when I see it but it wouldn’t be the first time I’ve heard rumors of Dan “having enough” and wanting out.

Kind of hard to tell if a coach is good at Florida. Too much talent and resources at Florida for a bad coach to standout. I definitely do not want a coach that could not win a natty at Florida. Honestly, surprised muschamp lasted as long as he did at uscjr.

I used to go in depth, mostly with idiot FSU acquaintances in my personal life, about how Dan is a really good coach and I'd have all these facts and little anecdotes ready to prove my points...Now, my blanket statement is just "He had Mississippi State ranked number one in the country in November during the height of Saban's Alabama dynasty...That's the only proof you'll ever need that he can coach".

People do that same thing with James Franklin. You'll say he's a great coach because he won 9 games at freaking Vanderbilt, twice, and the retort is something like "But he didn't win the SEC!!!"

USN&WR recently came out with their rankings and yes, UCLA is the #1 ranked public university in the US.

But Florida has moved up and is now tied at # 5 with Univ. of North Carolina - Chapel Hill.

Tennessee? Tied for 46th. So if UF is a "crap school," well, I'll let you figure it out.

Just making fun of Chip there, I'm familiar with school rankings, including those of the one I work at.... It's ridiculous for Chip to say he went to UCLA because it is a better school.
