Army orders Lions draft pick Campbell to military duty - NFL - CBSSports.com Live Scores, Standings and Stats

Poor kid. I know he made the choice to go to West Point, but he was told he would be able to play pro ball and be a recruiter in the Detroit area if he got drafted. Now they pull the rug out from underneath him. Lame

Wow, I wonder if this would have happened if he was going into his senior year? Probably-but I wonder.

Its sad because he was told he could play and went to the facility to sign and thats when he was told he would not be able to play. I dont like it that they went back on their word. Are we really in that big of need of soldiers that they couldn't let one soldier go and play and then change the policy to affect all future playes come out? This is a bad PR move on the Defense Departments Fault. He said that West Point was fighting for him but it was the Defense Deparment that told him he needed to report to duty.

I'm certainly disappointed with the decision. Imagine what a change of emotion that he must have had.

think about the kids Army swayed telling them they could come to Army and be able to play pro football. You know they used Campbell as an example.

If he were to be to killed or even maimed in Iraq that would be tragic. It is bad enough he was just yanked from the NFL.

Agreed, I have respect for our arm forces, but the kid deserves to play especially after being drafted and being told he would.

Let me get this straight the military lied to a kid to get him to enlist? Preposterous.....the only time this ever happens is all the fn time.

He's not being sent overseas. He's been assigned to be a football coach at either West Point or their prep school.

you don't "enlist" to get into West Point, and the obligation after graduation is well known. If you bothered to read the article, he was actually being treated differently than other recent service academy grads and it wasn't really fair. It sucks that it was done at the last moment, but Campbell knows what he has to do.

Wrong choice of words in enlist....did read the article and understood it. Served with guys that have been f'd over in similar, and not so similarways....Thats what I meant. Thanks for synopsis of the article.

he wasn't personally f'd over in that he knew what he was getting into the day he came back and attended his first class his junior year. That is the day he became obligated to the Army.

However, the USMA sports teams took it in the shorts on this one. I believe they should have let him give it a shot and become a poster for Service Academy recruiting. He does plenty for the Army as a public face.

I played with several folks who transferred out because of the commitment on the other side and the way it inhibits they're opportunity at a professional career.

Rick Reilly weighed in today on SI.com. Don't care for Reilly, but it is a decent article.

When you join the military you should know that your being sold a bill of goods. If not, you probably need the dose of reality that will be coming.

MontereyVol,

Are you currently stationed in the Navy at Monterey? I have a good friend in the Navy that is currently stationed in Monterey.

The only people that got screwed in this situation are the GM and head coach of the NFL team that drafted the kid. The kid knew what he was signing up for when he went to West Point.

Campbell would be the first to admit that he only got screwed in the timing of telling he could then telling him he couldn't.

I'll assure you that the academies' recruiting efforts got pounded by this little turn of events.

I would submit that a lot of folks heading to West Point have no real idea what they're signing up for.

I don't agree about them taking a pounding in their recruiting because of this. Just how many people do you know of that think that they have any chance whatsoever of a professional sports career that go to a military academy? ZERO.
