Arion Carter is Staying at UT

Kind of torn on Carter myself.

The guy is an NFL level talent, but does need a little more work.
In that respect I totally understand his return to college and respect him for making that decision...not easy for a young person to make such a decision.

The puzzling part is he dropped out of the draft and immediately went to the portal.
That's where I'm split...if the guy didn't want to be here so much that he not only left for the draft BUT also the portal, how do you explain that to the rest of the team?
How much is team chemistry impacted?

That’s an interesting point. Since he had already declared for the draft, was the portal his only path back to the college ranks? Is it possible he thought UT would not want him back?

All that matters to me at this point is UT apparently did want him back. That’s good enough for me.

Had not thought about that point...and not completely sure about the rules these days.
Perhaps the rules required him to enter the portal after declaring for the draft and dropping out.

I know a few years ago, a player could declare for the draft and return to school as l9ng as he didn't sign with a draft agent. Maybe all that had changed since guys already have agents.

Not that I’ve found. He may try to bypass it and hope to heal which would be a mistake. 30 or so years ago, I heard mine when the ligament popped. The pain instantly afterwards was fairly bad and I have an extremely high tolerance for pain. I ignored it and pay for it periodically to this day. If I had it to do all over again, I’d seek surgery. Hopefully he does.
To think that Carter played through the pain is a testament to him. I wish nothing but the best for the young man.
I hope he doesn't try to play through it again. He has a future and should make the best decision for that. He screwed up hitting the draft and he's got a second chance thanks to UT taking him back. For his sake and his future, I hope he gets good advice and takes it this time.

Coaching is going to have to REALLY step up to building chemistry in this era of NIL/Portal. It seems that both are kryptonite to team chemistry.

That may be the case, but I really hope the staff didn't throw that kind of money at someone who decided he didn't want to be here anymore and then came crawling back.
He put his name in for the draft like all players do that have a shot to get drafted. Afterwards he changed his mind and decided to play another year of college. You act like he took off to Baton Rouge chasing Kiffin. That's hardly indicative that he "didn't want to be here" just the opposite in fact. It shows he clearly wants to be here and believes in Knowles and Heupel to develop him more for the next level. Good luck to him. Hope he balls out!

I am glad he is back. He just needs to get healthy. As far as Telander goes, I don't understand some of the hate. He is a high motor guy and a team leader. I agree that he is not fast enough but he is still solid. He will probably come off the bench and contribute quite well. I really like he grit. We are pretty stacked at lb as far as raw athletes. Hopefully they can pick up Knowles system quickly and this won't turn into a Sunsuri situation.

This is the job Cignetti has done and Saban did for a long time.

Pay a fair wage and get buy in from the players.

Establish what you're offering them for what they are offering you.

Make sports participation an honorable business transaction.

Bull crap comparison

Saban had the most talented roster every year 1-85

Cigneti has nowhere near the "talent" Saban had except the Michigan State years.

Both obtained the buy in and paid for the talent.

The key is: just the talent won't win if you don't have the buy in, just the buy in won't win if you don't have talent.

Cignetti did an amazing job with lesser talent by getting more buy in. NOW he has used Cuban money to get talent and keep the buy in.

Saban did exactly that: make the buy in strong until you can buy the talent. Then Saban did both for a long time.

Does anybody know if his DEAL is more, less or same as before he entered the portal?

I DOUBT we upped it, a bad precedent, as it would minimize risk for doing so. But I am really partial to facts, not speculation. GOT ANY?
Only fact I saw was that he never entered the portal. Declared for draft and pulled out.
And for those thinking he couldn’t go to other schools, think, LSU just gave a guy millions with a lot more questionable injury than turf toe.

Half of that “rest of the team” is there for the money. This is a business locker room now. Not personal. Why do you think those Penn St guys came, cause they love Tenn?

Didn’t think much about this til you mentioned it. I can’t believe for 1 second those kids that went and got beat by Illinois won’t resent that a bit.
I know I dang sure wouldn’t forget it if I were in that locker room. And you can bet he will be a team captain next year also. I would hope his teammates wouldn’t let that happen and tell him you quit on us once…

Dude takes terrible angles is slow and can’t cover someone in a phone booth. Good on the run game but other than that is mediocre at best..

This. Despite it being right in front of people, they want to somehow deny it.

For that matter does anyone think Knowles or Heupel came to UT because they love UT?

You think he’s a hero now? He didn’t come back for his love of UT. He came back because draft stock wasn’t looking good, or he got offered a great nil package, or what’s likely is both.

I’m good with it, but let’s not anoint him a hero when in reality he was looking out for Mr. Carter, not UT.
Definitely not making him out to be a hero. Just think we’re quick to start talking crap about a dude.
Even if he didn’t come back he played hard for us.

And yes- he is looking out for Mr. Carter- just like every single one of us look out for ourselves above the UT football program :)

So deep now at linebacker.

You got Carter, Campbell, Perlotte.

Then you got Spillman, Telander, Harmon.

Then you got Burns, Rouse, White.

Not to mention Bolton.

Think most sec teams would love to have our 2nd or 3rd string lb players.
Spring practice is going to be ultra competitive for the LBs. Can't wait to see that hash out!
