Arion Carter apparently had a change of heart

I disagree. Guys we all know what it’s like paying bills and taking care of a family. I encourage every young man to stack as much cash as he can bc life is expensive and this is an incredible opportunity. Unless done sloppily, like Kiffen, no one bats an eye when coaches leave for a better situation financially.

He sacrificed his body for the Vols while here and he indeed is a VFL. Remember when the dude played through turf toe?

Carter was supposed to be a leader in that lockerroom. Probably time for a change for all parties. Actually hope he finds success elsewhere but I don’t see we’re missing anything; maybe our coaching and scheme sucked so much that he looked terrible but he wasn’t good at fundamental stuff either. A fresh start might be best for all
I agree a fresh start for all is needed. But my BVS says it will be very difficult to stomach if he goes elsewhere and becomes the great player we thought we were getting. UT invested time and money in this guy with very little return. I know, that's the way "the market" works.

For some yes. Not all. Money changes everything. Especially the amounts being thrown around in CFB. I’m all for payers getting paid, but the numbers are astronomically more than they should be.

One’s mindset changes a whole lot when you go from making room and board to being paid the top 1% in the nation.
The blame for the crazy market figures rests squarely on the schools offering the money.

If someone had offered me a $100k dollars (I'm old, that's like a million today) to play football when I was 18, I'd have taken it. You would've too.

Turf toe is terrible name for the type of injury it really is. It makes it sound like an ingrown toenail or something. In reality, if he is having surgery, it is serious injury that has ended the careers of many players. I would say that it is a testament to his dedication to the game that he played this year as well as an idictment of how poorly our coaching staff handled it. He was clearly limited and innefective most of the year, but he stayed out on the field anyway. I don't know what it is about Tennessee over the years where age trumps all when playing, of course there are always exceptions, but why did the coaches keep this guy on the field when he clearly could not perform?

On the other hand, he has obviously gotten some really bad advice. He could have stayed with the team and gotten the best medical care available, but now he has to handle surgery and rehab on his own. He is currently damaged goods and anyone bringing him in will be taking a huge risk. Based on his performance this year, albeit he was injured, why would anyone pay top dollar?
IMO you have properly summed it up. He is DEFINITELY struggling with the injury and its not something that just goes away. I have a friend who played WR in the NFL for 8 years. His feet and toes are still a mess 25 years later....and he suffered with "turf toe" as well. Wish the best for AC but the Vols will be fine...just hope he is.

If his injury was keeping him out of the combine, likely it would also keep him out of workouts and maybe even spring ball

Missing install of a new defense, and playing catchup to the others, in his last year of college ball....likely playing behind Campbell and Spillman, with Tea and Perlotte also rotating in....

Absolutely dont blame him for not coming back here. Also absolutely glad he DID play here. While defense was down this year across the board, he was also a key member of the 2024 defense that was exceptional and got us to playoffs

That’s a fair point that my fanatic side tends to overlook.

I mean he was going to NFL we got who we think is a better player in portal and money is allocated there. Carter has potential but he didn’t play up to it last year. We also need some leadership in that locker room and it isn’t going to come from a guy that skipped the bowl game.

I’m good with him being successful elsewhere. He never really did anything wrong here like was a cancer or anything; he’s just not the player or leader we thought we were getting. I’m good with him becoming that elsewhere

0%VFL. He’s looking for a bigger payday which is fine. But to call him a VFL is silly. Just another CFB mercenary traveling to the highest bidder. It is what it is at this point.

He's likely made more from NIL than some posters on here will make in their lives.. No sympathy, just leave.

Never said I wouldn’t. Of course anyone would. And yes I understand how free market works. Doesn’t mean I can’t still think it’s silly. I’m just saying CFB is now 99% money driven, not love for university driven. There might be the 1% that still go to a university they grew up loving, but must are just chasing coin. It blows my mind that we’re paying HS guys that have never played a meaningful snap 4 mil to sit the bench…. Then leave. It’s even more baffling that there doesn’t seem to be a correction coming.

These kids literally went from getting paid by means of beans and beds to becoming the top paid 1-2% in the nation.

As I said in the last AC thread, he's not ready for the NFL. UFA or very late draft pick. Needs to show he can cover, play to the sidelines, and time a blitz.

Right now he's just really good at stuffing the A/B gaps.

We loved being that school early on when we were one of the first schools to be aggressive with NIL, now folks hate it because schools with more money started playing. I was reading the other day about SEC and endowments and alumni. Nobody in the SEC can come close to competing with Texas money wise when they go all-in. Texas has a 47 billion dollar endowment. The next highest is A&M at 20. Nobody else even has 10. Tennessee is not going to be a long term factor in a pure money game.

Y'all are so damn stupid.

- This dude played with two turf toe injuries
- Wanted to go get paid so he skipped the Bowl Game to HEAL his broken body
- Heupel does the right thing and fires Banks
- Knowles comes in brings his guys
- Arion is told his injury STILL won't be healed quickly enough to participate in training for the NFL combine.

He obviously didn't want to play for Banks again!
McCoy sat out the WHOLE YEAR.
Why aren't you all getting on Colton Hood??
Damn Arion, tried to battle through his injury and now you all are saying he's trash???

YES come back to Tennessee. Sit and learn the defense all spring, and earn a spot in the fall.

Rest of you all just shut up! So many stupid people in the world! Always petty and SMALL.
Should he return to UT, I say Welcome Back Carter! I’ll see myself out.

Fully agree.

I think our best days, that I have been alive for, are when the UT is an underdog archetype. The guys that do more with less. Blue collar, lunch pale, something to prove, full of piss and vinegar, hard-nosed and too stubborn to realize we got no place being out there, and don't know when to quit.

When we try to be high-feluting (sp?), we appear to be ignorant at it, and tend to seem like we're out of our element, so to speak. We show up looking like "new money", and the established schools amongst the rank and file just smile in amusement, all the while guesstimating when we'll flounder and peter-out.
We're a proud fanbase and institution, no doubt, but a little self-diluted in our identity, imo.

I'm remiss to say that, Clark Lea seems better fit to lead UT's brand and place among the haves, than CJH. Lea assembled a team of what the sport considered cast-offs and less-thans, and put fear in the hearts of the "haves". To me, that is the Tennessee Volunteer spirit in athletic fighting form.

Remember the alamo!
