One of the more intriguing offseason questions is how running back Arian Foster would rebound from his game-changing fumble in last year's Outback Bowl against Penn State. Foster hasn't forgotten about it. And that's actually a good thing for Vols fans. Foster used it as motivation and had a picture of the play in his locker during spring practice. He touched it each day before running to the field for workouts. In the fourth quarter, Foster fumbled deep in Penn State territory, and the Nittany Lions' Tony Davis returned it 88 yards for a touchdown. It broke a 10-10 tie, and Penn State went on to win 20-10.

That game wasn't his fault. Penn State slammed the ball down our throat, but can't help to think that the outcome would have been different had he not have fumbled the ball.

That fumble was a major turning point in the game, but we didn't lose because of it. We lost because our offense self destructed after that fumble. Also, we did a terrible job in preparing for this game. I blame this loss on the coaching staff.

The offense didn't play well at any point in the game. The defense might as well have stayed in Knoxville.

After the Georgia and S. Carolina games I thought Ainge was in a perfect position to win the game. Unfortunately Penn State's defense was several levels above S. Carolina's and Georgia's.

It just seemed like we were totally unprepared for the game.It was obvious we had the better talent, but Penn St was the better coached team.

Was Foster's fumble a turning point? Maybe.

Were we outcoached? Probably.

Were we outplayed physically? Definitely.

Penn State has a well-deserved reputation as a plodding, grinding, well-disciplined, physical football team. They are, in every respect, a reflection of their head coach.

So are we. We're too damn nice.

Here's hoping we (finally) learn from our mistakes.

Go Vols.

We played badly enough against an inferior opponent that one ill-timed fumble lost the game. We should have been better enough than Penn State that one fumble shouldn't have been the difference in the game. Instead, of course, "they didn't want to tackle me," etc.

I really cant understand the mindset of some Vol fans. The PSU game I remember was a 10-10 tie halfway thru the 4th quarter.

What I just read, you would have thought we had been blown out.

It was an ugly, lethargic performance. Any game where the Vols cannot find an offensive rythym against a lesser team always feels like a blowout. It was a tremendous disappointment.

Oh...so in some minds, PSU was a "lesser" team. Not sure how people arrive at that conclusion...to me a "lesser" team is Boise State and I thank my God above that Im not an OU fan right now. I will never let them live that down.

I thank my God above that we weren't playing Boise that day.

I have watched the college football enough to know how teams match talent wise. For instance last year Florida, LSU, and Arkansas had vastly superior talent when compared to the Vol's squad.

Yes, PSU was an average football team, but UT had much more talent at skill positions and at QB. It should have been at least a 10 point win.

I understand...but saying we lost to PSU isnt as near as embarassing as saying we lost to Boise State. But I guess it boils down to the old adage: did we play that badly, or did PSU make us play that badly?

btw Ive been know to watch a little college football too and have a good idea that all the talent in the world doesnt mean squat.

I didnt say they werent talented. But for about a zillion years in a row, Mack Brown recruited the most "talented" classes in college football. How many MNCs does he have to show for it?

Talent doesnt always translate into wins.

One, and it came in a victory over what many would consider to be one of the top 10 backfields of all time in college football.

You cannot win without talent.

Penn st. was a bad match up for the vols, because their strenghts were our biggest weakness the line of scrimmage.

YOu cannot say that Arkansas ,Florida, and LSU had far superior talent. That is ridiculous. Tennessee had McBride, Harrell, Wade, Mitchell, Meachem and Sears all who went in the NFL Draft. We had and still have All-America safety Jon Hefney. Jerod MAyo was All-SEC, Erik Ainge set the record for accuracy, Morley was 5 stars, and so forth. That team had talent. We should not have lost to Florida 21-20 because we had a 10 point lead. FUlmer and crew do not know how to close because we were also beating LSU by 10! Arkansas just killed us, and you have to wonder what would happen if EA would have played. We should have been 11-2.

LSU, Florida and Arkansas were faster and deeper at nearly every position on the field.....and don't look now but McFadden is still running. Unless Ainge was going to suit up at linebacker, any assumption that we could have beaten Arkansas is simply hogwash. UT was physically beaten very badly by all three of those teams.

McBride was a defensive end that we HAD to move to tackle because of depth. Matt McGlothlin started.....I repeat Matt McGlothin was a starter. Florida and LSU both had 4 Justin Harrells and Jason Mitchells each.
