Are you still confident in Josh “Beuhler..Buehler” Elander turning this around?

Did I hear the announcers on TV last night say that no first year head coach has had 30 or more wins?
Elander inherited a team that just went to Supers. Usually first year head coaches inherit bad teams from fired coaches. 30 wins is nothing to get excited about unless the prior team was awful.

I would argue that Elander didn't inherit a Super Regional team. He inherited a Super Regional "Brand Name."

You've mentioned before how inexperienced this team is, and it has shown. This team doesn't have nearly the talent last years team had.

Am I super excited about the job he's done this year? No. But I think it's a good baseline for him and hopefully something he can build on for years to come like Earley has done at A&M

After reading my post, it came across as much more negative than I intended. The reality is Elander inherited a good team but not a great team. By no means am I saying that Elander has done a poor job this season. I will judge E by how he handles the off season (player retention, portal additions, and 2026 class retention) and by the results of the 2027 season. This roster is a “make the playoffs“ roster. I’m just saying that the 30 wins for a new coach stat isn’t really applicable to TN based on where the program was/is. The job was open due to a promotion to MLB and not due to a normal firing due to a program in the dumps.

I wasn't trying to argue, and hope it didn't come across that way. I definitely agree on the 30 wins mark, but if that helps recruiting/portal, promote it all the time. He will definitely have some interesting decisions to make in a couple weeks/months.

Very similar to basketball (IMO), does he go for production or potential?

I think we should be happy about the 30+ record for wins by a new coach and enjoy it when the media mentions (now and in the future) because it's a positive for the program and for E, but not concern ourselves with it otherwise. (We surely wouldn't want Josh and Tennessee Baseball not to have that record!) We don't want to either explain it away or overhype it. Just quietly enjoy it and keep moving forward.

I believe/know this team would have had similar struggles at the plate under CTV because we saw similar problems in the past (think the nearly lost season of 2023 that was saved by a late season run)
However, I think Frank would have the pitching issues straightened out with all the guys knowing the "job"

The team has shown life offensively with Clark, Grimmer, Grindlinger, Marin, and Chapman improving as season has gone on. Wright and Ford have cooled a bit but are still strong. Brown is still Brown and I think can still get there. But the whole lineup tends to tank at the same time with no clutch hits against quality arms.

The entire pitching staff - after last weekend anyway, has gotten worse. They likely need to get those guys out of the bullpen and sitting with the rest of the team in dugout because whatever they are talking about in the pen can't be all that positive.

This team was going to struggle with whoever the coach was. I'm not sure it would be to this level but I think our record would be 2-3 games better. I think we win that last UGA game. I think we win that last LSU game. I don't think Vanderbilt sweeps us.

The young guys (Grindlinger, Clark, Brown) will be better next season. More consistent.
We'll get quality transfers to fill the gaps. Marin, Myatt, Grimmer are draft eligible sophs. Chapman is gone, Ford is gone. Wright is gone)
Should the young Grindlinger make it to campus, that's huge plus.
Myatt was not drafted last season out of Juco and with his limited PT, I'm not sure he get's drafted again. I hope he's back!
I have to believe that Jay Abernathy will eventually explode on the scene like Trey Lipscomb did in 2022. He's got to be frustrated as his playing time has diminished though

The staff needs to find some guys in portal that are great 2 strike hitters. I'm not sure Clark or Brown will ever be considered great with 2 strikes
The staff needs to lock in a lineup as soon as possible in early season and I hope we have the Left/Right guys to alternate them in the lineup once again.
And we need a staff of sports psychologists for the pitching staff.

Good Point.

It’s all good as I didn’t take it that way. All in all, I hope E wins big.

Gotta have some of both. Core roster (80%) from HS recruiting but plug holes with proven portal players (20%) IMHO.

I think that, at this point, this Tennessee team is what it is. Pitching is wildly inconsistent as far as starters and relievers. Hitting is awkwardly inconsistent. Defense has been terrific, and the ability to hold baserunners has been noticeably better this year.

The last 2 series to come could go decently, or could go south. I just don’t see us going on any kind of run, especially not this year. Elander seems as frustrated as the fans at some of the poor play this year. At some point, the players are responsible because E can’t pick up a bat or throw a pitch. Time will tell how Elander recruits and the results that occur, but I don’t have any big hope that suddenly we will turn it around and play great baseball over the next 4-6 weeks.

I am totally unqualified to rate Josh or the current roster of players. What I miss is the big personality of Tony V. He was capable of making the post game interview, after beating Lipscomb 28-3, interesting. This sport is pitching dominant. You either have it or you don't. It takes an enormous amount of hitting and fielding to make up for any pitching deficit. 30 wins is outstanding with this group.

I think Coach E has done a solid albeit not great job with his group this year. However, he’s trying to establish his own identity in how he wants his team to look and just like in any other sport, that takes time. I say a minimum of 3 maybe 4 years is required before we can make proper judgement.

I agree. Welcome to the forum.

GBO!!!

Thread bump to reaffirm my confidence in Coach E at this point in his career.

Inconsistent, yes, as I expected with youth, but developing and getting better most every week.

Even starting to win big games at home.

I love Tn baseball!
I like the way the Vols have played vs Texas. Pitching and hitting has come alive and producing like we expected before season started. Hope it gives them confidence going into SEC tourney and NCAA playoffs.

We had some disappointing points in the middle of the season, but we are starting to turn the corner. We swept Mississippi State, if we can sweep Texas today, we are on the right track.
