With all due respect to Mr. Hendrix, here is a link to an article by Phil Steele ranking this year's teams in terms of an experience formula.

Orlando Sentinel - Phil Steele's Experience Chart by Phil Steele

The ranks for SEC teams are

This is how he explains it:

There is also a coaching adage that for every Freshman starter you have, you lose one game. With that in mind, we compiled the following chart. It lists the total amount of Senior starters on the team as well as Seniors in the two deep. It also shows all of the Juniors, Sophomores and Freshmen starters and the total amount in the two deep.
I then devised a point system to break down the most experienced teams. I awarded 3 points for every Senior starter, 2.5 for every additional Senior in the two deep, 2 points for every Jr starter, 1.5 for every additional Jr in the two deep, 1 point for a Sophomore starter, 0.5 for an additional Soph in the 2 deep.
I then subtracted 1 point for every Frosh starter and .5 for every Frosh in the two deep. The total points column uses that formula to figure out the total points awarded to a team.

I think what kills UT's number is projecting 3 freshment to start and 9 freshmen in the two deep chart.

Before fall camp, this list seems like a waste of time. Many coaches have no idea who the starters are at this time...

Additionally, would it be better to have MORE starters back from a team that went 5-7 or have some new blood?

I think that Jonathan Crompton last year (junior) shows that these kinds of "rankings" are completely useless when it comes to projecting what a team may or may not do.......not that that is what he is trying to do here.

In fact, the more that I think about it, what is Mr. Steele trying to say here?

I don't like any charts or numbers predicting any type of sporting event outcome or how a team will perform. Just dumb

Just an effort I suppose to quantify something intangible. It might detect trends, but that's it. Who are the three freshmen starters, by the way?

I'm looking from a BlackBerry that doesn't show the entire table... Does it really have KY on top of the list?

If so, I have no choice but to call the list complete BS...

One major flaw that jumps out at me is having an equal change in points between each class. At the very least, the jump from junior to senior should be less than the others since plenty of juniors are bigger contributors than seniors and then leave for the draft.

That's a good question...maybe they're projecting Nuke or Teague at WR due to injuries?? Or maybe Jackson or Myles in the secondary? Askew?

I think a lot of these freshmen will see the field this year in meaningful ways (Hughes and Brown in particular), but I don't know who he might be projecting as starters at this point.

You can probably also add Bryce Brown. He might start over Hardesty, we'll see.

I think at least 2 freshmen will start out of Nuke, Marsalis, Jackson, Myles, and Brown.

I think that is an excellent point. History suggests that the leap from freshman to sophomore is huge relative to the leap, say, from sophomore to junior.

I don't think we will have any Freshmen starters for the season opener. There will be a lot in the 2 deep and getting playing time especially on returns. I believe a few like Brown, Askew, and Myles will win starting jobs as the season progresses.

You're not missing anything.

That's what I guessed.

Instead of discussing the question of whether the freshmen starters at UT should be a concern, just dismiss the issue because its brought to the board by a Gator fan. Excellent intellectual honesty.

No wonder the mindless masses comprising the bulk of UT fandom hung on to Fulmer for dear life for so long. Ignore it, and it will go away, right?

Quantifying intangibles is sorta like trying to design a flotation device under water while drowning.

"Mindless masses." That's rich, coming from a guy who's never contributed an insightful commentary on college football.

I'm only kidding.

To be honest, we're all very impressed with your candor, level-headedness, and objectivity. In fact, we'd all love for you to explain again how Tim Tebow will be, unquestionably, the #1 overall pick of the 2008 NFL Draft.

I don't know where he'll go in the draft. Ask me in November.

But if he ends up being a low first round or even second or third round pick, he'll still have led the Gators to 2 or 3 national championships, won a Heisman (or two) and owned the University of Tennessee.

Maybe rented for a couple of weeks. Only problem is the old rental agent is gone and a new management has taken over.
