Are we still going after Cam Newton???

You wouldn't be "swaying" a recruit at this point. You'd be recruiting a player that got booted from the team for felony theft.

Just FYI.

Keep your computers locked up.

Seriously, if a guy is so bad Meyer boots him do we really want that in Knoxville?

The coaching staff is evaluating his play at a JUCO this year before they offer.

I think he has all the abilities to play at UT. He reminds me of a T Martin. Iv talked a few buddies at Florida and they all said the same thing that he bought the computer from someone and that someone is who stole it.. He had the computer in class and that’s where it was noticed.. If he stole it he wouldn’t have it in class... He would have sold it JUST like the other individual did. Cam Newton could be a really good QB at UT. Strong arm, great running abilities. We shall see.. but id say ut will offer this kid if we do not land a prime time QB

The kid made a mistake, but he beloved by his teammates and has all the physical ability in the world.

You failed to mention that when the cops came looking for the laptop he threw it out of his dorm room window... Kinda shows he knew the laptop was stolen when he took possesion. Regardless, if he can prove he no longer has criminal issues and shows good character to our staff then I'd still take him and keep him on the same type of leash Hood is on. The kids got talent, no doubt. The question is whether or not he stays out of trouble. He will be evaluated during his JUCO season and we will hear more later unless we get a top tier QB, then we will probably pass on Newton.

From what I heard, Newton was NOT kicked off the team at UF for the laptop incident. He was suspended and later decided on his own to leave the team and transfer to JUCO.

This actually makes more sense. I don't see CUM kicking him off for this unless he was looking for a reason to get rid of him. There have been UF players do a lot worse that remained on the team.

He left because he was beat out by brantly(sp) Tebow's backup. He is a over rated player and I think no one would look at him at all if we had a QB recruit by now. He is diff then Hood. Hood was guilty by association. Newton bought a hot product and then ditched it to keep from getting in trouble. He is a former UF player so he has zero accountability. Urban has allowed them to act like idiots for years and Newton is no different. He is a product of Spread, He is a spread QB, and he is too old to come in and take a year to learn/ be taught then try and start. He will not be the savior people think he will be to come in and start day one.

If the worst thing he does in College is buy a laptop he knew was stolen.....he would be doing WAY better than a lot of students, myself included. :)

If you eliminated every player that had ripped someting off once in his life you'd have to purge a lot of football players.

I don't know if this guy is a thug or not. I'm not sure how others are coming to that conclusion based on the sketchy details of a laptop theft.

Actually I read back when he first came into discussion multiple people stated this was true. Florida and Ut fans alike. I do not have a link I am sure if you dug way way way back into his thread you could find it.

Also Hood was 13 thats extremly young. thats a 6th 7th grader. Newton was in college.

I will somewhat agree with the statement that I have done some dumb things but its easy to keep away from stolen electronics. If he needed a computer I am sure a booster could have donated him one. He had to know a shady person(character concerns) and then know he was buying a stolen cheap cheap priced computer. Then to try and throw it out the window instead of playing dumb just shows he was in the total wrong and notice no one stood up for him, unlike the victim in the hood case. Also we cought crap for that taking newton would never help our image. I know kiffin might not care but taking florida rejects and one that has serious character issues is not something we should be doing.

Newton obviously isn't the smartest guy

Stole a laptop
Spray painted his name on it
Logged onto his UF account
Threw it out the window when the cops came

Plus, he was 3rd string at UF. He hasn't taken a dropback...ever really. Plus with only 2 years of eligibility, I don't really want him.

That's all kiffin and UT needs: leftover UF rif raf!

What Kiffin and UT need is playmakers and lots of them. QB is a major area of concern, and many (myself included) think that Cam could provide an improvement in that area. Course it really doesnt matter what you and I think, but what the coaching staff thinks that matters in the end.

I would love to give Newton a shot. He has all the athletic ability and upside in the world. If he can mature and look to stay in the pocket then he could be a huge asset in 2010 with his cannon for an arm and his ability to make plays with his feet when the play breaks down.

The laptop situation wasn't particularly heinous and might have helped make him a better person after the humbling experience of being kicked off a NC team and losing a huge opportunity.

I would look for him to come to UT hungry and ready to prove to Gator Nation and the rest of the world what he can do.

Taking Newton would be a no-lose situation even if he never starts for UT because he would be invaluable for our defense to practice against to get ready for Spread teams.

Without getting into a big discussion we have a couple of players on the team now that have done worse.. Like I said, not trying to discuss the other players.. Just trying to make a point..

+1000000

This is what I have been saying. Also I have a feeling that he ends up at MSU to go play with the new head coach.(old UF OC)
