In his Sportsline.com column today, Mike Freeman says Florida fans don't want Chris Leak to break any of Danny Wuerffel's records because he's black.

Story

Leak plays in the South, in the SEC, and believe me, despite the influx of black quarterbacks in the conference, race is still a factor in both. Only naïve dupes or bamboozled fools don't know this. Part of the evidence of how race, at least partially, is relevant when it comes to Leak is how some Gators fans -- not all, just some -- treat Leak. He has an opportunity to break several significant school records by Danny Wuerffel, who is white, and there are Gators fans who hate the idea of a black thrower shattering the marks of a white Wuerffel.

This story takes me back to the "Which SEC team has the worst fans" thread we had a couple months ago. Maybe a minority but certainly not a quiet minority. Load and obnoxious.

Early on I'm wondering if this is all commentary by Freeman, but then there is Curtis later on, giving him the quotes that back him up.

And Freeman's not just shooting at Florida. There's enough scatter shot in there to cover the whole south. Again with the 'racism only exists in the south' mantra.

No, it doesn't exist only in the south... Relatively large contingencies of Nazis still exist up here in Oregon and Idaho. But, I've still heard some first hand accounts of the extent of racism still existant in the south. Since I don't live down there, nor have really ever been there, I'll keep my mouth shut on this issue. Anybody wanting to discuss it with me via PM or AIM is free to do so. I think my contact button should be on the bottom of this post.

EDIT: Scratch that, click on my username to get my contact info.

Couldn't have anything to do with the fact that Wuerffel won 4 consecutive SEC Championships to Leak's 0? Or the fact that Wuerffel beat in-state rival FSU in the Sugar Bowl to win the National Championship? Or the fact that Wuerffel posted a winning percentage of .882 to Leak's current average of .648? IT HAS TO BE THE FACT THAT WUERFFEL IS WHITE AND LEAK IS BLACK!

Never understood what good comes out of an article like this. Anyone that thinks that way certainly isn't going to change their minds because of the article.

I would guess the writer is operating under the idea that sunlight is the best disinfectant.

I would guess that the writer did not adequately do his research. If he did, he would have found the stats that I cited above, as proof that Florida fans should hold Wuerffels accomplishments in higher esteem than those of Chris Leak.

First, did no one send Freeman the message that the SEC coaches named Leak 1st Team All SEC QB and Jamarcus Russell 2nd team? Second, as Freeman points out, Leak has a 22-11 record as a starter. That is at a school where they expect a heck of a lot better than 66% winning percentage. Third, the UF fans want to see UM's option and Leak is not an option QB so of course they will want to see what Tebow can do if the Gators drop a couple in the first half of the season.

I don't even know what to think about someone like Freeman.

His job is to get people to read his story. He accomplished that. Story is full of holes but you only know that after you have read it. He did his job for his paper and advertisers.

But is sure is fun reading Hatvol's justifications for Freeman's claim...

UT while I agree that Wuerffel accomplished more in his tenure, the author is correct with his statement. I just think there are so few people with that view, that it is counterproductive to mention.

I thought that the job of journalists and reporters was to enlighten people, to present the facts as close to the truth as can be presented? In which case, Freeman failed, miserably!

So, you believe that they do not want him to break Wuerffel's records because he is black? Yet, in the same state, with people brought up in the same neighborhoods, Florida State fans practically canonized Charlie Ward...

What justifications? I simply referenced the article and answered Lex's question about why he may have written the article.

Yes he did. Agree 100%

I take the "sunlight is the best disinfectant" to mean that you believe he is uncovering the truth. I believe he is creating his own sensational news story.

He's not a reporter, he's a columnist. His job is to provide opinion and commentary. That is exactly what he did in this piece.

I was simply stating to Lex what I thought Freeman's response to charges that his column was counterproductive would be. By the way, go back and see how much FSU fans were canonizing Ward prior to his senior year. He was being roundly criticized, with the implication being he couldn't grasp FSU's offensive scheme.

It should still be enlightening...

His piece actually sets people back 30 years.

If a piece by an obscure college football "sets people back 30 years," we're all doomed anyway.

What did he do, winning wise, prior to his senior season that other FSU quarterbacks had not?
