On Sports Talk this week Phil said although things worked out well for Chris at Texas, he thought Tennessee was a better fit and if he had it to do over again he would push Chris to play for the Vols.

Granted, his son Matt is currently on the team, but that's a pretty bold statement regardless.

Someone refresh my memory. Who did we replace him with? Casey?

....so is he saying he "allowed" Chris the decision or that he "pushed" him to Texas? One real possibility is he is posturing for the University, Coaches and Fans to give his other son Matt a bump.

He said he let Chris make the decision to attend Texas, but in hindsight he would have been more involved.

Whether it's just lip service or not, after the crap that's happened lately this is at least a small shot in the arm.

Assuming it's not just lip service, I'd love to hear the rationale behind his statement.

I didn't hear it, but I would think he was talking about the depth chart situation at Texas vs. Tennessee. By signing with Texas, he walked into a QB controversy with Major Applewhite.

I guess. No question that's a factor, but Texas won a lot of games and Chris made it to NFL. It just seems odd for him to make that statement at this point.

I don't think Simms was ever a fan favorite at Texas despite his success (sort of like Casey Clausen). My memory is kind of fuzzy, but I think I remember that the decision to bench Applewhite was very unpopular.

I purposely avoid anything to do with Texas so I have no idea. I remember he wasn't a fan favorite in Tennessee. :)

I found this:

Simms played college football at the University of Texas at Austin. In a controversial decision, Simms was named starter over Major Applewhite in 2001, before Applewhite's senior season. After turning the ball over four times in the 2001 Big Twelve Championship Game, Simms gave way to fan favorite Applewhite, who led a stirring comeback against Colorado. Applewhite later passed for a then school record 473 yards as the starter in the Holiday bowl.

I think I remember watching that Big Twelve Championship Game.

Yes, it was very unpopular. I know Texas fans in the Dallas area that are still angry over Mack Brown's handling of Major Applewhite.

Not sure how many here remember, but Sims was committed here initially. He said after one of his visits here, there was obvious racism within the team. Blacks and whites did not socialize together. I have no idea if that was true or not, but that is the reason he gave for switching schools. I'm sure others here who follow recruiting know this as well.

Applewhite is a up and coming big time Offensive Coordinator somewhere isn't he?

At least C. Simms got a my dream job! He get NFL player treatment, sideline seats, 7 figure salary just to wear a cap and hold a clipboard! Life has to be great.

. . . and the rest of the fallout from the Simms decommit was that Tennessee likely could have gotten Ken Dorsey but he was firm to Miami by the time Simms switched, so that left Tennessee with Casey Clausen . . . which I always thought turned out OK.

Simms>>>Clausen. I think we had a better chance at a BCS Championship in 2001 with Simms. Man he would have a lot of weapons around him: Stallworth, Kelley Washington, Whitten, Travis Stephens, etc. and a very good O line to boot. We might have had a better chance at beating LSU IMHO.

I think Phil was saying that Tennessee was a better fit for him, coaching and offense and the fact that Major Applewhite was already the fan favorite.

He did say that he did not regret that he went their and that things did turn out OK. He just stated he wished he was more involved in the process and would have pushed him toward Tennessee. He also stated that he was not involved as much with Chris, coaching wise as he was with Matt, do to his own career and him not wanting them to feel the pressure of following in his footsteps. He tried to push both of them to baseball careers. He also said if he had to do it again he would have been a lot more involved.

Simms was definitely better than Clausen . . . but unless Chris Simms could play defense, we weren't beating LSU.

I still don't understand all the hate for Casey Clausen. The kid won here, A LOT, against our main rivals.

You are right.

Obviously Clausen's 343 yards passing that night was terrible. Never mind the fumbles by Stephens and Stallworth in the 2nd half or the defense coming out of the locker room in the 2nd half dumber than Algernon.

You fail.
