....so is he saying he "allowed" Chris the decision or that he "pushed" him to Texas? One real possibility is he is posturing for the University, Coaches and Fans to give his other son Matt a bump.
On Sports Talk this week Phil said although things worked out well for Chris at Texas, he thought Tennessee was a better fit and if he had it to do over again he would push Chris to play for the Vols.
Granted, his son Matt is currently on the team, but that's a pretty bold statement regardless.
I don't think Simms was ever a fan favorite at Texas despite his success (sort of like Casey Clausen). My memory is kind of fuzzy, but I think I remember that the decision to bench Applewhite was very unpopular.I guess. No question that's a factor, but Texas won a lot of games and Chris made it to NFL. It just seems odd for him to make that statement at this point.

Simms played college football at the University of Texas at Austin. In a controversial decision, Simms was named starter over Major Applewhite in 2001, before Applewhite's senior season. After turning the ball over four times in the 2001 Big Twelve Championship Game, Simms gave way to fan favorite Applewhite, who led a stirring comeback against Colorado. Applewhite later passed for a then school record 473 yards as the starter in the Holiday bowl.

. . . and the rest of the fallout from the Simms decommit was that Tennessee likely could have gotten Ken Dorsey but he was firm to Miami by the time Simms switched, so that left Tennessee with Casey Clausen . . . which I always thought turned out OK.Not sure how many here remember, but Sims was committed here initially. He said after one of his visits here, there was obvious racism within the team. Blacks and whites did not socialize together. I have no idea if that was true or not, but that is the reason he gave for switching schools. I'm sure others here who follow recruiting know this as well.
Simms was definitely better than Clausen . . . but unless Chris Simms could play defense, we weren't beating LSU.Simms>>>Clausen. I think we had a better chance at a BCS Championship in 2001 with Simms. Man he would have a lot of weapons around him: Stallworth, Cedric Wilson, Whitten, Travis Stephens, etc. and a very good O line to boot. We might have had a better chance at beating LSU IMHO.
