I missed him on 104.5 in Nashville this morning. Tuned in afterwards and the hosts were basically saying that the defense will be in trouble if some DTs do not step it up big time ASAP. Also, discussed that UTK really does not have the personnel for a 3-4 front and that it is not something you can teach in a few weeks of Fall camp. Was this something that Jimmy broke down?

I dont see any reason why we couldnt have a 3-4 other than the time it takes to teach it because i'd think we'd definitely have the personnel
DE - Xavier Mitchell
NT - Mapu or Bolden
DE - Antonio Reynolds

LB - Ryan Karl
LB - Jerod Mayo
LB - Rico McCoy
LB - Ellix Wilson, Adam Myers-White, or Chris Donald

If we ran the 3-4, our D-line would get man-handled every game. We don't have the size up front to do that kind of stuff. Hopefully it won't come to this.

the move of Pope to the D-Line tells me something about the situation there...no depth whatsoever

You have to have big DE's to effectively run the 3-4. Because they play basically DT technique. We don't have the ends to play that scheme fulltime.

Reynolds is probably big enough at 270 but Mitchells undersized. Maybe they could move Fisher back outside or something but he's not that overly huge either. I didnt realize they move Cody Pope to defense. Do he have the speed needed to play defense?

which has been the staff's biggest concern about the D line for going on 2 years now........

One thing that concerned me coming out of the scrimmage reports is that the OL is apparently knocking the DL back at the los. If I thought the Vols had an all-conference caliber OL this would be great news.

minus the 1st series ones on ones, the stuff i read sounded like the D got the better of the O all in all........several sacks recorded (scrimmage sacks, i know, but........)

The # of sacks was initially alarming but then I started thinking that with the WR corps last year the strength of the offense was obviously going to be the passing game and the line was designed for pass protection. This year it's probably going to be much more run oriented and there will be more empahsis on run blocking.

Pope will be a redshirt this year. He's going to play DL on the scout squad. His current weight is about 275 and he's expected to add 10-15 pounds between now and 08 and will be moved to OL.

Creer looked good, so that's great news in light of Coker's situation and Vereen showed up a little....I wonder why Rogan didnt get a little look.

just thought that he would at least get a quick look at rb considering Coker being out and what Dennis did in the TN v KY game

I thought they would too but i guess they are confident enough in Creer and Vereen to leave him at corner.

Edit: he is getting looks at KR and PR though.

Vereen was overlooked by recruiting sites...I think he and Creer will be a dangerous duo down the road

Vereen was very overlooked... he set rushing records in the Charlotte-Metro area, which has usually produced some pretty good football players. All the attention in that area focuses around Independence High, which has won several state titles and produced the likes of Chris Leak and Mohammed Massaqoui, but the other county schools like North Meck around there produce very good players, like Vereen.

Well looks like the opposing game plan will be the same this year. Line up shove it down our throats and quick hit with the play action.

You know basically how Tennessee got things done in the late 90's, when we had the horses.

Im as excited about Creer as I have been about a new back at UT in a long time, I really think he can be the next great Tennessee rb

I'm also excited about Creer after the scrimm, hopefully the coaches will get to see what he can do with first team offense vs first team defense.
