Anybody know anything about working on a Barge?

So a friend of the family works on one and he told me and a friend of mine if we think we could do it and not make him look bad he would put in a good word for us.

Since we live in Memphis we would be going up and down the mississippi river and from what i understand we will start out doing 15 days on the boat then 15 days off.

And if that goes well we will be able to do 30days on then 30days off.

We both will be deckhands on the boat and the starting salary is $200 a Day.

So pretty much i was wondering has anybody ever worked on a barge or known anybody to?.

Id love to get some advice. Thanks

Your probably young and in this economy that job should pay you very well. The hardest part about most jobs, indeed in most of life is walking thought the door the first time. Sounds like an adventure you should not let pass.

Depends whats on that barge

I have worked as a deckhand before (not on a barge) and my only complaint was how hot it was, because you are either outside in the sun or in the engine room, which is hot and loud. I would do it for $200 a day if I was young, didnt have a family and it wasnt something explosive on the barge.

edit: you may have to pass a drug test

Maybe they will film a spin off of Deadliest Catch on this barge.
Will the crew make it out in one piece after docking in Memphis and getting lost in the inner city?

I know a couple of people who've worked barges before. I hope you have a good back and can stand the heat. It's not that bad, for much of the time you will be bored but when the time comes to jump in they expect you to work your tail off. Not a bad gig, especially once you get a little seniority and don't pull the really tough jobs on board.

Also ive looked it up online abit. But does anybody know what all dutys a deckhand has?.

I keep reading different things from google.

If i wrote all the duties of a deckhand on my work computer it would probably get me fired.

I know several people who are working or have worked on barges. It pays well, but the work is very hard and the schedule is very difficult for most people. Those 30 days on often consist of 16-18 hours of very labor intensive work.

In short, it is a different lifestyle from the regular workforce. 30 days of really hard work away from home at good pay for manual labor followed by 30 days off. Most people don't like it. Some think it is great. Due to the limited labor pool, there is also pretty good opportunity for upward advancement; I know one person who started as a deck hand and is now a pilot.

If you think it is for you, my suggestion would be to try it and see. What have you lost if you hate it, 2 weeks?
