Any Dylan Sampson Updates?

I know that Cedric Tillman is day to day and will be a game time decision, but is there any news I may have missed regarding Dylan Sampson? I think he might be the most talented back we have.
He won’t be a game time decision. If he he is able to play, he will fly with the team on Friday. Limited rosters on away games.

He may end up being the next great UT running back, but saying he is without letting him prove it is ridiculous. A whole lot more backups fail to meet expectations than do meet them because so many fans want to crown them before they've proven anything. Just let it play out.

Show me where I said he’s “the next great UT running back.” Being the next great UT RB isn’t required to be better than Small. Small isn’t going to be playing on Sundays.

I’d like to see more of Sampson because Sampson gives us more play-making ability than Small and Small is terrible in pass pro. And please don’t give me the “you don’t know as much as rhr coaches” line. The coaches, Swain, and everyone who watched fall practice said the same thing…Sampson provides a dynamic no one else on this team does.

Hell, for all we know, Sampson is going to get 15-20 touches Saturday.

I remember when Tennessee lost to Florida in 1997 because they had no running game with Mark Levine. Everyone wanted Jamal Lewis to start, but coaches knew best! Lewis was just POTENTIAL!

Somehow he figured it out the VERY NEXT WEEK, though and rushed for 150+ against Ole Miss then 230+ against Georgia. Amazing!
That is a fact. But I will say our current situation isn’t quite the same in terms of talent it’s much closer. I am excited about the freshman but it probably helps him in this situation to blend in to the lineup. But I do expect his carries to increase as time moves on. The sprained ankle set him back a game or 2 as well. I like all our backs, they all play hard. GBO!

You invoked the name of Jamal Lewis in this discussion about Sampson. All im saying is don't crown him until he's done something to earn it. Being good in practice means nothing until you show it on the field. How many "practice stars" have we seen over the years that never show it when it matters? Hopefully he will end up being great, but stop acting like he's the best running back in the room just because people are excited about his potential.

Sampson will get as many "touches" as he deserves AFTER he demonstrates he can protect Hooker. I want to see UT with a dynamic RB too... but not at the risk of losing Hooker.

Jamal Lewis was mentioned because he was a better RB who coaches sat behind an inferior RB…not because I was saying Sampson is as good as him. The scope of that analogy (and its limits) should be pretty obvious.

Then why does Jabari Small play at the risk of losing Hooker?

You are arguing he is the better running back and isn't playing and compared him to an all time great to make that point. The fact is that no one knows how good he really is yet. He is a true freshman with lots of potential. You don't have any idea if he is better than small or Wright right now.

It’s a similar situation. Coaches talking themselves out of playing the clearly better talent. No one is claiming Jamal Lewis’s genes were spliced.

I guess because the coaches deem he knows and can execute pass protection on a consistent basis.

I didn't say that Sampson couldn't do it. Only that he would have to prove that he can protect the passer.

He isn't the clearly better talent.
I predict this doesn’t age well. I too see the waggle/vision that Sampson has. He will impress all as the year progresses. Don’t penalize the young man for his limited touches, as this will all change soon.

The key word being "clearly". He may end up being the better talent, but being a strong practice player your first year on campus means very little in the bigger picture. He needs to show it on the field.

So we disagree…happens.
Only on how clear it is that he is better. He's is clearly talented, but he is a true freshman that has shown very little in real playing time. I'm just reserving judgement.

Don’t remember Sampson other run but looks like 2 for 14. I guess the fumble he picked up and ran was his long so the 7 yard average is not a good indicator. I’m assuming he was to block the blitzed. Hooker & all our RBs averaged over 5 YPC which was good.
