6'3" guard son of former New York Knicks Anthony Mason, is reportedly now a graduate transfer out of Niagra University according to CBS Sports. Tony Basilio tweeted this this morning:

TonyBasilio: @TonyBasilio

Is Anthony Mason's son the final piece of Donnie Knoxville's first class?

Mason averaged 25.6 points last season, ranking second in the country behind Creighton's Doug McDermott.

Do the Vols have real interest here or is TB throwing crap against the wall to see if it sticks? I think it'd be hard to turn down that kind of 1 year scoring help regardless of redundancy.

Oh I'm sure Tennessee is interested, but they aren't the only interested school.

Agreed, I think there will alot of interest from around the country. Just wondering if there were rumors that we or Mason made contact, or if TB was just throwing out blind speculation.

This staff leaves no stone unturned, so I would say it's more likely than not that they've already made contact.

I don't think Basillio does enough homework in the recruiting world to know who's available and who becomes available through transfers. Hopefully, he has heard something....but like BTO said I'm sure CDT has reached out to Mason along with every other coach around the country.

Is that code for he doesn't want to play for us? I can't imagine us not wanting to go after a guy of this talent. Will definetly be a game changer for whichever team he goes to.

If we are only gonna take one more player at most, and Mason has little to no interest in playing PG, then I get it.

You've currently got Richardson, Hubbs and Mostella who are all high level talent and play the 2/3. A guy like Mason is gonna wanna go somewhere he's gonna get 30mpg, and that might not be available here at his position.

BTO is right, Mason has no interest in playing PG and DT is happy with the guys he has at the 2 and 3. The staff still feels good about Mostella getting in. I'm just hoping a good PG decides to graduate early and come available this summer and Tennessee can land him.

I believe in the Chris Dortch article they said Ian Chiles, 6-1, IUPUI was going to play the PG

Relationship building and hard work are essential in recruiting, but sometimes, a little luck doesn’t hurt.

“Sometimes, you get lucky,” Shumate said. “I’ve known Ian Chiles since I played against his older brother back in high school in 1996-97. And I played with his next brother at Murray State when Ian was about nine or 10 years old. I’ve known the kid 13 or 14 years.”

Despite that familiarity, Shumate didn’t force the issue.

“I told him I wasn’t going to bother him while he was trying to finish everything he needed to graduate [from IUPUI],” Shumate said. “As soon as you walk, we’ll talk. No pressure. He walked on a Sunday, visited us on a Monday, committed on a Tuesday. It happened fast, but the last thing I wanted to do was pressure Ian just because I knew his brothers. I didn’t want to create bad blood.”

There were other factors in Tennessee’s favor. After playing mostly off the ball for three years at IUPUI, Chiles wanted to play at a higher level of Division I and show he had point guard skills. The Vols, because Darius Thompson decided to transfer to Virginia, were in need of a replacement.

Tyndall and his staff had one more connection with Chiles in their favor. His older sister India played softball for Tennessee, well enough to be chosen an All-American in 2007 after hitting .417. When Chiles and his family visited, the Lady Vols’ softball staff met with them.

“It was funny,” Shumate said. “Ian’s mom couldn’t make the trip, but she told us, ‘what do I need to come for? I can probably show you around campus.’ She’d been there before with India. The softball staff [Ralph and Karen Weekly] was very helpful. We took Ian and his family by their offices. They were incredible with the family.”

You can pretty much guarantee someone will come available, but technically if the staff knew about it it would mean they're having impermissible contact with players. Not saying that doesn't happen, but it's why you typically don't hear about these names until the player declares it or says he's transferring.

Mason and Chiles are essentially the same player through their first 3 seasons. I don't think having them both would help. Plus, Mason is going to want to play substantial minutes, and I just don't see those available at the 2 spot at U.T. right now.

The word is that CDT is going to save the scholly should a very good pg becomes available to keep that and other options open.

Actually he's got his arm and fingers fully extended until Starks gets the ball down.
