Of the six SEC team head-to-head match ups this past Saturday, five were one score games. The Vols and Sooners among them. Setting aside the other issues that influenced the outcome of our game, one could say the difference was the Oklahoma kicker. Tate Sandell made four field goals, three of them over 50 yards in a six-point game. Meanwhile, we’re missing 35 yarders. It wasn’t that long ago that many college kickers were not even on scholarship. If every week in the SEC is going to be a bunch of one score dogfights, you better go find the next Adam Vinatieri, or Tate Sandell, or you’re going to be losing close games. We need to throw some NIL cash at some kid who’s proven he doesn’t miss.

Exactly right about the parity and close games. “Next man up” sounds good, but the transfer portal has spread out the talent and nobody’s depth is quite what it was. We’re done with 3-5 year recruiting cycles to build a program. Going to be a lot more teams climb fast and have turnaround seasons and a lot more really good teams with 2-4 losses.

I wondered when someone would point out the kicking game was the difference in this game. I have stated lately that the portal will make or break most teams. YOU MUST BE EXCELENT AT EVULATING THE GUYS YOU BRING IN FROM THE PORTAL. At this time we seem to just do OK. May need to hire someone who is an expert in this field. May need to be someone who is not on the staff but maybe a new hire who has a lot of experience in this field. Someone from the NFL who has helped over several seasons to build a team from fair to really good.
