My takes, if any one cares, after watching the O and D videos provided by Freak.
Offense...
-Does it make any sense when I say that our OL will do better against SEC type defenders? Watching the game live I thought our OL was getting pushed around physically. However, after watching the film closely they were getting beat by speed and guys who had superior leverage simply by the fact that they could get so low to the ground which did not allow our OL to fully engage with the defender. Credit App State though because I think their coaches prepped their players on this and had them play angles vs larger OL.
-Kamara has to get more touches out of the back field. While I think Hurd is our work horse, I think there is an obvious difference as to which one hits top speed quicker. With that said, both backs looked a little heavy footed and were brought down defenders hand swiping at their legs. "GET THOSE KNEES UP!" Like I always here Gillespie yelling in the practice videos.
-Dobbs was concerning for me. The decision before the half that resulted in an INT was the worst obviously. But sometime during the 2nd quarter we ran the same little hitch route to the WIDE side of the field to the OUTSIDE receiver. Both times the CB was half a step away from an INT and one play was broken up. Why run that play back to back after near disaster after the first. AND WHY would Dobbs make that long throw across the field again even if the play was called. Gotta be smarter.
-I know you guys get tired of hearing this, but it is the truth. THE OFFENSE WAS VANILLA. Yes, it was almost to the point of giving us nightmares. Yes, we should have opened the playbook up earlier when it was obvious that App State had the potential to keep the game close. But Dobbs didn't run the ball. We tried to throw the ball down the field a grand total of 2 times I think... and one resulted in the game tying TD. This is on the coaching staff and the reluctance to open up the playbook earlier almost seriously derailed our season.
-WR's looked fast and played physical. Held blocks well in the run game and taking away the drop TD by Williams they did a good job as a unit catching the ball.
Defense...
-It has the potential to be nasty. Individual shout out going to Micah Abernathy, who was ALL OVER the field and made plays in the run game and pass game. This guy surprised me because there was never a lot of hype about him when he first came on board. Also Cortez McDowell who played inspired after stepping in full time for JRM.
-Cam Sutton being Cam Sutton. Tackled well and had an NFL type interception that he created by baiting the QB and finished the play with his great athleticism on a diving and twisting grab.
-We gave up 115 yards to one of the nations most productive RB's last year based on yardage. And a lot of the time he was making something out of nothing. He is a good back guys.
-Tackling fundamentals need to be revisited this week in practice. No if, ands, or buts about it. Shoop had the defense in position to make a play almost EVERY time and we had a few players either not breaking down and trying to tackle air, or having their tackles broken because they were trying the "grab you with my hands" technique.
-Our DL is going to fun to watch this year. They were dominating their OL on individual matchups and were in the backfield every play. One thing App State did well, and Butch Jones said this in his post game interview, was the back side cut blocks. They were coached well on that and seriously put a hurt on our backside pursuit. But with the exception of a play or two, our perimeter containment prevented some big plays on reverses and end arounds.
Sorry for the long post. I just had two cups of coffee and its raining or I would be outside cutting the grass instead.
Thoughts?
