My takes, if any one cares, after watching the O and D videos provided by Freak.

Offense...

-Does it make any sense when I say that our OL will do better against SEC type defenders? Watching the game live I thought our OL was getting pushed around physically. However, after watching the film closely they were getting beat by speed and guys who had superior leverage simply by the fact that they could get so low to the ground which did not allow our OL to fully engage with the defender. Credit App State though because I think their coaches prepped their players on this and had them play angles vs larger OL.

-Kamara has to get more touches out of the back field. While I think Hurd is our work horse, I think there is an obvious difference as to which one hits top speed quicker. With that said, both backs looked a little heavy footed and were brought down defenders hand swiping at their legs. "GET THOSE KNEES UP!" Like I always here Gillespie yelling in the practice videos.

-Dobbs was concerning for me. The decision before the half that resulted in an INT was the worst obviously. But sometime during the 2nd quarter we ran the same little hitch route to the WIDE side of the field to the OUTSIDE receiver. Both times the CB was half a step away from an INT and one play was broken up. Why run that play back to back after near disaster after the first. AND WHY would Dobbs make that long throw across the field again even if the play was called. Gotta be smarter.

-I know you guys get tired of hearing this, but it is the truth. THE OFFENSE WAS VANILLA. Yes, it was almost to the point of giving us nightmares. Yes, we should have opened the playbook up earlier when it was obvious that App State had the potential to keep the game close. But Dobbs didn't run the ball. We tried to throw the ball down the field a grand total of 2 times I think... and one resulted in the game tying TD. This is on the coaching staff and the reluctance to open up the playbook earlier almost seriously derailed our season.

-WR's looked fast and played physical. Held blocks well in the run game and taking away the drop TD by Williams they did a good job as a unit catching the ball.

Defense...

-It has the potential to be nasty. Individual shout out going to Micah Abernathy, who was ALL OVER the field and made plays in the run game and pass game. This guy surprised me because there was never a lot of hype about him when he first came on board. Also Cortez McDowell who played inspired after stepping in full time for JRM.

-Cam Sutton being Cam Sutton. Tackled well and had an NFL type interception that he created by baiting the QB and finished the play with his great athleticism on a diving and twisting grab.

-We gave up 115 yards to one of the nations most productive RB's last year based on yardage. And a lot of the time he was making something out of nothing. He is a good back guys.

-Tackling fundamentals need to be revisited this week in practice. No if, ands, or buts about it. Shoop had the defense in position to make a play almost EVERY time and we had a few players either not breaking down and trying to tackle air, or having their tackles broken because they were trying the "grab you with my hands" technique.

-Our DL is going to fun to watch this year. They were dominating their OL on individual matchups and were in the backfield every play. One thing App State did well, and Butch Jones said this in his post game interview, was the back side cut blocks. They were coached well on that and seriously put a hurt on our backside pursuit. But with the exception of a play or two, our perimeter containment prevented some big plays on reverses and end arounds.

Sorry for the long post. I just had two cups of coffee and its raining or I would be outside cutting the grass instead. :)

Thoughts?

Really nice analysis, Sam, thanks for it. Every single one of your observations makes sense to me.

Yes they are Appy.
And We are yet another overrated soft SEC team with still a questionable Coach.
The Bricks are starting to crumble. CBJ needs to light a fire. Really very simple.:hi:

Yes, we should have beaten them more handily. But you are the one who shouldn't down play App State so much. They were 11-2 last year, returning as many starters as we did, and are a team who is just used to winning. Granted we gave them momentum early, but they used it to their advantage. Any team with the talent differential that they had coming into the game, who can make it a game, should be commended.

Rhe game should have been over by half

Can we just reserve judgement until after the VT game? If we look apathetic again then we have every right to be concerned. But if we win handily some of you guys will feel silly for overreacting to one game.

I thought your analysis was spot on, the only thing I disagree on is the defensive line play. For the caliber of players they are, they should of been way more disruptive Saturday.

I don't think anyone is over reacting, we have only seen one game so we can only react to one game. I would bet we beat VT by 20, based on the talent level of this team, but I have this fear of the stubborn conservatism coaching virus and we see more of the same. What if their kicker was better and we lost that game? It would certainly take the air out of Bristol. Millions of dollars hang in the balance, hundreds of thousands of starved fans, national TV audience and this is what they serve up? Ok, on to next week.

Part of me hopes this was us overlooking App State and focusing on Bristol. It happens and we pulled out a win, albeit and ugly as hell win. However, I think most of OP's points are valid and that concerns me. I'll refrain from panicking until next week.

I don't buy this "keeping it vanilla" crap. Plenty of teams this weekend rolled up their non-conference opponents without worrying about tipping off their next opponent. DeBord was our O Coord last year and were running the same offense, what's there to hide?

Stanford had to open it up against K-State, an inferior opponent. Michigan St had to do the same against Furman. As did TCU vs South Dakota State, Oregon vs UC Davis, Florida vs UMASS(ranked 128th btw, lowest you could be ranked), UK vs So Miss, Arky vs La Tech, Virginia vs Richmond, LSU vs Wisc, and Miss St vs South Alabama. All of those teams had problems and were forced to show more than they wanted and for some it was too late or almost too late. I didn't include the programs playing equal(imo) opponents because no sane coach would play vanilla in those situations.

Edit: I think you could include VT vs Liberty but I didn't get to see any of their game so I wouldn't know. Seemed like the score was close for a long time when they showed it.

We have high quality QB's sitting on the bench that should be starting that can make all the throws.
Teams know if they focus on the run and stop the short pass from Dobbs, they will probably beat Tennessee.

Define "talent". They seem as well trained and smaller than we. Me thinks Smaller, better trained, maybe faster, means talent advantage in our favor is questionable.

From what I seen thursday our offensive sceme was one dimensional. You can't run, run, and then pass the ball. From a defensive stand point it's pretty easy to stop. We have the raw talent to be winning every game, if not competing competitively. Just need to play with more urgency, and stay focused. I also hope we can make adjustments on defense, I seen a bunch of busted plays. I'm very proud to be a Vol. We can get this together!!

No, that would make too much sense. We will overreact and make ridiculous statements

I love how people are clinging to the "Umass was ranked 128th" line. Do people really believe that the preseason polls are worth a @#$#? I mean, they had LSU ranked #5 after spending all offseason focusing on them. Do you honestly believe pollsters have any idea where teams stack up after about #30?

They won't feel silly. They'll just carry on as if they saw it all along. Some people live for the chance to spew negativity. I think it helps distract from personal shortcomings. JMO

Here's to hoping the Vols match up better with VT than they did against Appalachian State

I'm not all that sold on preseason polls either, but one thing I do believe is that Appy State>>>>Umass!
