Another Stupid Question About Over-signing

You lose 3 scholarships period. So it would affect the 85 limit.

If our hard number is 20 next year, it is because we forward count 5 via GS and BS.
Oversign penalties would drop that hard number to 17.
It would also be an infraction while on Probation.
No way in heck we do that.

As someone said above, we're still on probation. CBJ isn't foolish enough to do anything risky to draw the attention of the NCAA.

Isn't this just an automatic administrative thing, no investigation, hearings, or rulings?

Yes, we are still on Probation with NCAA.
If we have a 2 or more minor infractions, or one major, it could open the door to more penalties.
We will not oversign.

Best case. We can take 36 with 6 in unclassified status, and they do not count to either classes 25 limit.

What I think will happen. We take 36, w/ 6 unclassified, and they count against the 2015 25 limit. Leaving us with 19 available to sign next year.

Worse case, we sign 30, back count 5 of those, and GS 1 or 2 , and Blueshirt 2 or 3.
Worse case we have 30 - 35 players and that limits next years class upto 20.
The problem with worst case is, getting the GS, BS, and Walkon players to delay enrollment and trust that we will have a spot for them with a scholarship.

Thank you for your posts. Good info.

The "trust" issue would work against the staff forever if they backed out of any verbal understanding between them and the player/family. So I doubt that will become an issue.

Is it possible that the coaching staff has decided to take the penalty for over-signing?

It looks to me like next year's class will have to be small anyway because we won't have the available scholarships... so few graduating.

Definintely will not take a penalty.

Wait a minute, I've seen a post like this before . . . oh, like 50 of them. Here's just a thought. I know, I'm just spit-balling here . . . let the coach, whose job it is figure it out! Does it really matter if we don't understand. Regardless of blue shirts, grey shirts, red shirts, we can only have 85 at a time, and I have faith that CBJ can count to 85. Just a thought.

Butch has the phaser set to stun and that will allow him to sign as many as he wants. He will then teleport them when they sign to the year that they can sign and then send them back to the current year. This explanation makes as much sense as many of the explanations given here...

Well at least you admitted it was a stupid question. No. We will not oversign. As of today we'll probably sign 20-22 next year. Of course that number is very fluid with the probable transfers, walk-ons being awarded scholarships, and possible dismissals but I'd be very surprised if we signed over 22 next year.

It was a legit question IMO

You have to consider that any GS, BS, or Preferred Walk-on may still count to next years class.
It depends on how the 6 EE that signed their FAA are classified.
If they are classified as 2013 preferred walk ons, or if they are classified as GS for 2013.
The wording for both was ambitious, and has been corrected by NCAA already.
The rule cannot be enforced the 1st year its updated though.
They technically do not fit any current defined classification.
They are not GS, they are not walk ons, and they didn't sign LOI.
Moving forward, after this year they would be classified as EE GS players.
That will make them count to the next year after they filed their FAA.
I think we will likely also see FAA be considered the same as post dated LOI moving forward.
This would prevent a player from signing multiple FAA, like Malone did this year.

For instance next year (the 2015 class) if we had a player sign FAA before the Dec deadline. Then EE without signing LOI, and pickup the scholarship their 1st semester they would automatically be considered a GS player for 2014. This would make them count against the 2015 25 limit.
That wording was missing, and created the loophole.
NCAA will not be able to really do anything about it, as UT informed them of the error on their part, and advised that we would not go over the 85 limit.
UT is following the letter of the law, maybe not the spirit of what was intended, but that is not actionable according to SEC, and NCAA charter.
It may make them mad, but it is not a violation.
Anyway, that is my understanding on the situation.
I am not fully in the know, but know some people who have confirmed some of what I have said. They would not allow me to speak to them in terms of UT, only general facts.
I just put the pieces together enough to see the picture.
If I am in error, springboarding from what was confirmed to me, in applying it to UT I apologize. It is hard to take off the Orange Colored Glasses sometimes.
I hope we can do it, if not CBJ still has a backup plan.
I do feel very confident that the loophole will work as I have mentioned.
If not I will leave .... the door open to crow eating buffet.
GBO

Leave it to the NCAA to not even write their own rules right!

No it doesn't "matter" if we don't understand -- as in Tennessee football will cease to exist if we can't ferret out the facts on this issue. But this IS a recruiting FORUM. Some of us simply would LIKE to know the objective facts concerning the whys and wherefores of how many we can take. What's wrong with "mere fans" wanting to understand the applicable rules? I have faith that CBJ has a handle on the situation as well, but that doesn't stop me from wanting to know the details. That's what a forum is all about, so please chill.

This. Who here isn't curious about how CBJ is going to pull off signing more than 30 (signing limit plus 5 back counted EEs)?

The whole thing has me scratching my head until NSD. And I doubt I will be stopping afterwards. After all, there is the 2015 class to start trying to figure out. To those who have been doing this longer than I, is it ALWAYS like this?
