Another ridiculous preseason ranking

SECCountry.com ranks all SEC position units 1-28.

Pretty baffling, but they have UGA defense ranked as the 6th best position group in the league...right ahead of UT defense at #7.

UT offense is #11. UGA offense #20. Lots of interesting choices, very few of which make sense.

It's cause they have players.

Speaking of players - The 2-deep for their defense that the OurLads site is showing has a walk-on (redshirted in 2013) beating out Rico McGraw for a starting CB spot - (although I'm sure they don't really have starters and everyone will play, etc. etc.) - I looked up the 247 composite rating for each player.

The 2-deep is dated 8/11/16 so obviously subject to change.

Right now our defense is just hype. We were exposed a few times last year so they are probably going off that "but but but Shoop" I know I hear you, and if he gets this defense performing like we all hope it will then these preseason rankings will mean what they always mean, nothing

They also have Vandy's defence over Tennessee's offence when our offence absolutely demolished their defence. Just don't understand.

You mean unlike the 503 yds Michigan put on UF or....

Maybe you're talking about UT putting over 500 on UGA and even Vandy, PSU, and UF going over 400?

If there's any "hype" it is definitely the UGA D and the UF D more than UT.

I think the writer sits on his own ranking system.

Florida’s coaching staff stresses the importance of “money down” defense and it finished seventh in the country in third down defense last year.

Statistically, Florida was #18 in the nation stopping 3rd down conversions last year while Tennessee was #2.

cfbstats.com - 2015 National Team Leaders

On Georgia he writes:

The front-seven is inexperienced, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

except when it fits our narrative

adding,

With my BFF Kirby Smart now in charge

:eek:lol:

1) UGA lacks experience in the front 7, which is one of the worst areas to lack experience in.

2) They have the most overrated secondary in the country. Yes they led the nation in pass defense, but anyone can lead the nation in pass defense when you are playing in the SEC east and your out of conference schedule consists of Georgia Tech and Georgia Southern, two teams who don't even pass the ball.

And VN thought the world was going to end if we didn't get Mecole Hardman and he can't even beat out a walk on to start at CB in his 2nd year at GA?

What a strange concept for an article. It's like, to hell with apples and oranges, we're gonna put together a blog comparing apples to laser pistols and Jim Croce songs.

16th in the country in scoring defense last year, and we return more talent and upgraded the DC.

These things are written by some egg head pulling thoughts out of a dark hole!

Exactly...pre season rankings mean absolutely nothing. The only benefit is to be ranked high and keep winning then you are in the Playoff talks.

One other note to add - ESPN (obligatory, "who hates us") recently rated all position groups for 2016 SEC Teams. So I sorted the ranks just to see how they stacked up on average and then compared that to the ESPN FPI. It suggests that our offense will be tested by the FL defense but their offense should be smoked by our defense. With GA, we need to contain their rushing attack and let our offense have it's way with their defense.

In summary, ESPN thinks Florida's greatest relative weakness is across the board on their offensive side and Georgia's greatest weaknesses is on their defensive front and a very subpar receiving corp. In the aggregate they conclude that we are the much better team overall. While the writer in the OP's link dismisses the inexperience of Georgia's front 7 on defense, ESPN thinks it ranks near the bottom of the league. Clearly someone is overlooking the fact that the SEC is a line of scrimmage league.

note: ESPN had GA RBs ranked 2A (if healthy) and the UT RBs at 2B.
