Well beating Georgia and Florida is a pretty big step in that direction. And three straight dominating bowl performances has me happy for now. Really need to win the east soon though.

Accurate comment. Dooley never competed. Butch competed and came up short. Now he has to win championships because competing for championships isn't good enough.

In the Jones Era, we haven't even controlled our destiny in the SEC going into November. How the hell are we competing for national titles?

My reading of that is, he's just saying we're getting closer. Striving, contending. Which we have been. Here's hoping 2017 is a breakthrough year. Go Vols!

You misread his statement in two ways:

1. He said championships, not national titles.

2. He said contending, not competing. When you read "contend" think "strive"; it is a closer synonym than "compete."

How is it considered 'contending' for the SECe when you are out of the running before the end of October, with 3 conference games still on the schedule?

based on my interpretation of the word contend. A few synonyms for contend: compete, fight, go after, push for.

I would say that TN most definitely contended in 2015 & 2016 but came up short (obviously) of winning the Sec East by finishing 2nd in both seasons. I believe Butch knows as well as anyone TN came up just short the last 2 seasons.

Butch very well could and one could argue should be fielding a TN team this year with back to back East championships. It is what it is, let bygones be bygones.

9-4 won't be acceptable indefinitely but the trend under Butch is currently UP. We are winning and I think we will start winning more, we are recruiting very well and we are 3-0 in the postseason for the first time in a very long time.

It's not. It's basically another example of Butch telling all of us our expectations are too high.

Go back and read the quote and tell me where he said, "we've competed for national titles?"

He said contend for championships. You completely changed the wording and then bashed him off of something that he didn't say. He has us competing for the division and he will have us competing for it for the duration of his time here. It's not like anybody has run away with the division in years. It's going to be a close race in the East, and the winner, 80% of the time, is going to be from the group of UT, UF, and UGA and will be the team, out of those three, that catches a break here and there. And if it does come to the point were Butch has reached his ceiling then we need to make sure that we have a sure-fire replacement, because Butch has set the bar a lot higher with his recruiting and program restoring.

i've not been shy i sharing my dissatisfaction with some of his methods of communication.

that said, i've no issue with this. we have contended/competed at a level capable of winning the East the last two years.

relative to how the hits kept coming at the end of last year, this shouldn't register a blip on the radar screen.
