Qb: none(I agree you should take one every year but we took two last year and one will surely get redshirted, I don't think it's worth the extra spot unless you can get an elite, which we did not)
Rb: jalen Hurd, treyvon paulk
Wr: josh Malone, Eric lauderdale, Lawrence lee, kameel Jackson
Te: Daniel helm, Ethan wolf
Ol: Orlando brown, Coleman Thomas, dontavius Blair
De: dewayne Hendrix, joe henderson
Dt: Derek Barnett
Lb: Chris weatherd, dillon bates, Kevin mouhon, Elliot berry
S: Todd Kelly, Cortez McDowell
Cb: deandre Payne, DJ smith, rashaan gaulden(nickel cb)
Ath: neiko creamer, Stanton truitt, tj harrell, Evan berry, Vic Wharton
K: Aaron medley
That's 29. If josh Malone goes elsewhere we would likely add another dt, lb, or ol but I'd bet on lb given the amount of high caliber prospects were in on at the position.
A lot of dbs that are really high on Tennessee are gonna get their feelings hurt because there just isn't enough room to take them all. Wes green, Chris lammons, and John battle all come to mind. Wes green and DJ smith are interchangeable in my opinion but if we can get DJ we'll take him. Chris lammons and Wes have us number 1 but there simply isn't enough room as crazy as that sounds.
Evan berry will get his shot at slot wr. Tj Harrell will start out at rb but I see his true position settling at strong safety. Vw3 is a corner. Truitt will be used on offense and defense if possible and on special teams too, he's the kind of kid you just want around the ball as often as possible. Creamer can play the hybrid wr/te role, or move to defense and be a pass rush de or lb but his position probably has the murkiest outlook of all the athletes at this point in time.
We really need to take dts in this class I know I know. And we have to switch Barnett from de to dt to fill a space. I just don't see us taking a low caliber player at the position when we are in on so many high caliber prospects at other positions. Our recruiting of high caliber dts this year just does not look good IMO and despite the need, I don't think we'll get the high profile dt we need. Academic casualty is not an option here either so count valentine out. So next year look for us to take 4 minimum, similar to our lb recruiting this year.
As much as d booth has bought in, and as good a person he would be to have in this class, I don't see the staff taking him based on numbers. We will take one more wr, 2 only if josh Malone wants in. I'd say take Malone and be done at the position completely but he is a late commit and we will not wait that long to get burned so 1 more soon(lauderdale) and Malone if he wants in. I think we'd all agree if we have a spot open late, and booth has not decided we would love to have him. But I don't see booth waiting on us, he has stated he wants to be committed to a school. Worst case scenario is he doesn't want to wait on us and get burned, and announces for candy instead. Ugh.
I still disagree with some of the staffs moves like Jonathan Johnson at wr which is killing our ability to really bring in numbers in this class, which we really needed and would have helped loads in respect to bringing in talent considering how good our recruiting has been and how many high caliber prospects would seemingly come here. Hopefully they figure out a way to add a couple more spots so we can not pass up on some of the guys were in on.
And upon further review, we did not take a dt last class. We can't afford to not take at least two this class. I stand by my opinion of where we currently stand, but I trust the staff to find a way to open up another spot so we can take a true dt in this class. They will be selective though. This commit must count. It might even be Charles Mosley if we can snatch him from under Bamas nose.
