And the end of college football begins..

Let's put this in perspective....I despise politicians on all sides but the NCAA is ASKING for this:

NCAA president Mark Emmert and others have asked federal lawmakers to help them create a national law that governs the future marketplace for college athletes selling their name, image and likeness rights. The NCAA board of governors is scheduled to vote next month on whether to change its rules to allow athletes to collect NIL payments. Emmert said at a conference last week that their vote is in some ways "contingent upon" receiving help from Congress.

It's really hard to beat some of the dumb bills introduced in Congress, but this one is up there. Vote NO to ALL of it. Intercollegiate sports is; and should ALWAYS be, an amateur level of athletics. No more "one and done", no more "name, image, likeness" ********. If you don't want the opportunity to earn a free education through athletics... pay for it like all the rest of us do. Go get a regular job or go to trade school or enter the military. There are plenty of opportunities for kids. I don't feel ONE OUNCE of pity or empathy for ANY athlete receiving a full or partial scholarship. Nobody is FORCING these kids to participate in intercollegiate sports. WTF is wrong with people?

Football needs a minor league. These politicians should put the pressure of the NFL to create a minor league for young adults that want to play pro football and aren't worried about an education. It's VERY simple.

So...you are a socialist then? You don’t like the free market? You feel people shouldn’t be able to capitalize on their name and likeness or should be capped?

In the mid-eighties or early nineties, due to tax evasion circumstances, the federal government took over several well known and well established brothels in the state of Nevada where such activities are legal.
After a year of having these establishments in their control, every one of them was losing money and a couple had filed for bankruptcy.

So I ask you, why should we trust a government that couldn't run a whorehouse be entrusted to run college sports?
The defense rest your honor!!

50% of revenue left after scholarships to go back to the athletes?

Assuming $40k per year a scholarship, that adds up to $3.4 million a year. In 2019, football alone generated $96.1 million in revenue at UT. Subtracting scholarships out and then dividing by half leaves $46.35 million which works out to $545,294 per player per season.

UT operating expenses for football in 2019 were $52.7 million meaning after giving players their share, football loses money. And there's zero money left to support all the non-revenue sports.

Sure, that will work.

And we thought it couldn't get any worse with the NCAA . . . Introducing the Federal Government . . . this will be like watching three drunk monkeys f***ing a flat football.

GBO - beat the Aggies . . .

The day they start paying them is the day I'm done watching.
Want to know why your reply is really dumb? I was a college athlete 20 years ago and I was getting paid. Guys have always been getting money in every sport, what's wrong with making a dark market light and regulate what's already happening? Trust me, nobody will miss you when you go

Yeah it’s real fair that schools, coaches, shoe companies, tv networks and everyone makes billions of dollars off of them but they aren’t even allowed to profit off their own image. That is modern day slavery.

If it’s the end, so be it. The current system is ********.

I don’t have a problem with the kids getting some kind of weekly/monthly stipend for spending money, etc.
Seems like they forget they are getting a college education for “free” that can be worth $100k at the low end and much more than that at some private schools

I can see state government trying to do this, why does the federal government think that this falls under their umbrella?
Because the ncaa could not avoid players being paid for their image and the ncaa did not want to let each state write their own legislation, they asked for a federal organization to issue and maintain regulations. I'm sure you can offer a better solution.

Much like many industries that get taken over by the government, I suspect the quality and performance of the staff dropped significantly. Ask yourself, would you pay to have sex with your mail carrier or local DMV worker?

"Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., and Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn."

Spartacus and Old Stolen Valor.

I wouldn't worry too much about anything coming out of this brain trust.
