After rewatching a few insights:

-The refs were atrocious, holding on our D-line was all night without a single call. If the line of scrimmage was called fairly then Mertz would have been running for his life all night and this game looks very different. Speaking of Mertz he played probably the best game of his career, hitting tight windows and making the right plays all night.

-The o-line played awful, but this was predictable as we we're starting essentially 2 walk ons with cooper and mincey out. WR were open down field, the scheme was great as usual but the blocking just gave them no shot. The o-line being in this situation is partly due to the 2020 transition class finally catching up with us, the good news is there are plenty of solid options on the way, or currently on the roster but too young/inexperienced.

-Milton played well enough to win this game, he's not perfect but he's well above average. It's not fair to compare him to Hooker, but it happens constantly. Criticism of him is simply low effort, there were 10 different issues that were bigger than Milton not always making the right play. Same goes for play calling, we had plenty of open WR and the scheme looked good. At the end of the day though you have to have SEC level oline players.

-Hadden is so dam frustrating because 90% of them time he plays great coverage, and then 10% is just the worse possible mistakes. The none tackle was shameful and I'd like to see the freshmen CB's play more. We should see this happen as the year goes on, typically after the bye week is when the new guys start showing up more and more.

All that being said I honestly believe we have the better roster and coaching staff, everything went right for the gators and they were greatly helped by the refs. If we can get healthy on the o-line we can still go 8-4/9-3 which was my preseason predication anyhow. It's kind of a transition year in terms of roster talent.

My boss, a Gator, was at the game and told me we had open receivers all night. He couldn't understand why we kept trying the run, which is the strength of their D. Especially when their corners could not cover us.

I agree. And with a Gator. What's wrong with this world?

So what you're saying is that SEC games are won or lost in the trenches? I think this is a pretty good assessment for what I witnessed Saturday.

I think 7-5 / 8-4 is more realistic right now. The problems on defense can potentially be fixed with coaching, but our O-line is a problem regardless right now. This is where we're feeling the impact of the "empty class" when Pruitt was fired. It'll get better, but realistically, we're too thin at OL to be competitive at the top of the SEC ATM.

But I do agree --- the criticisms of Milton are lazy. Milton played reasonably well. And I was the first to criticize him a few years ago, but he's improved dramatically since then. The problems on Saturday were primarily the O-line, the secondary, and some of the most 1-sided officiating I've ever seen. Heupel better be giving the SEC office a tongue-lashing this week!

Did the Vols O line play softer because they were getting called for holding? And did Florida's O line continue to more aggressively hold the entire game because they weren't getting called? Yes to both if you are slow and need answers to rhetorical questions.

The refs are always to blame. Let's not blame:

1. OL or lack there of
2. Terrible QB
3. Dropped passes
4. Conservative play calling and lack of consistent running game
5. Tons of missed tackles
6. Horrible DC calls.
7. DL not able to get to QB
8. A head coach with his hands tied at the QB position or is it like JG and Bubba??

Honestly there a more but I think that enough so yes, the refs didn't help but if they were perfect we still have a team that isn't disciplined and meshing as one. We have a QB that didn't get it done in Michigan, lost job here and regained due to lack of options and now we are stuck with this disaster. We have a center that has had to nurse injuries for two years. If he is smart he nurses for a few more games and gets healthy for the possible chance to get to the next level. I am not sure that he will make it but its possible. We have a defense that wants to play touch or flag and won't wrap up and make a hit. Lastly, we have a kicker making tv commercials. That's awesome...
