Dear anyone associated with the University of Georgia:

As i sit here on Monday, Dec. 3rd, the day after the BCS ratings came out, i notice a great deal of antagonism toward the system that crowns the NCAA football bowl subdivision champion.

I listened to coach Mark Richt last night make his case and explan his position on the matter. And actually, as i listened to him, his points were both valid and honest. However, i am a little surprised at the reaction of some of the fans regarding the new polls.

Let's sum up. CMR's most valid point regarding the Bulldog's chances was that GA was ranked 4th while everyone knew they weren't going to have a shot at the SEC title to begin with. If the rationale exists that they were the 4th best team, and they weren't going to play, how does that change over night? I would actually agree with that. But when asked abut whether or not a conference championship should be a requisite for a national title, he agreed with that, but also correctly stated that was not a rule. "we are being penalized by a rule that doesn't exist", a rule he would agree with if it were in existance, but i digress. he does have a point. and this is why i empathize with you, GA fans.

However, in this case, the voters and the polls got it right, even if the rules didn't tell them to. maybe just maybe there are people out there that dont' have to be told what to do? what a novel concept.

LSU jumped GA in the final poll to go to the BCS title game. You cry foul. Understandable, for reasons already stated. but here's a little reminder of why the only people you have to blame is yourselves.

1. Sept. 8th. South Carolina with all the glory of Steve Spurrier marched in to Athens and beat you. This didn't seem to be that bad, as at the time, SC seemed to be the "sexy" pick to possibly win the East, and at one point was a top 10 team. Besides at that point, you still had games against TN and FL, as did SC, so plenty of time to work it out later. What happened though? SC went on to finish from that point 3-6, losing their final 5 games of the season, missing out on the post season all together. ouch, that's gotta hurt.

2. Oct. 6th. ah, the first chance at redemption. after the tough loss to SC and the thrilling OT win at Bama, the road to the SEC E took you to Knoxville. TN was reeling after losing 2 of the 1st 4 games, both in dreadful fashion. The TN defense had given up 104 points in two losses at that point, and had fallen out of the top 25. the coach was all but fired. And this was your game to reclaim what was yours. what happened? you got pasted 35-14, in a game that apparently would be forgotten rather quickly by the rest of the country.

Well, and as it turns out, those would be the only two games you would lose all season, in route to thrilling wins over your 3 biggest rivals FL, AUB, and GT.

Yet amazingly, GA was not allowed to play LSU for the SEC title, which as it turned out looked to be fortunate as you find yourself sitting at #4 knocking on the door.

oh the joy you must have felt as LSU lost to ARK and Pitt beat WVU and OK beat Mizzou!!! drinks all around!!!

but wait, LSU can still win the SEC? we can't? what? wait, that can't be true, i've been hearing for three weeks that GA is the best team in the conf? how unfair this system is.

so not only does the "hottest team" in America not get a shot at it's own conf. title, they're now being shunned from the National Title because of a rule that doesn't exist? A Complete and utter shame. I mean after all, why don't these things get settled on the field where they're supposed to?

oh yeah, that's right..... it was. In Knoxville, on Oct. 6th where you proved not to be as good as the Tennessee Volunteers.

Good day, congratulations on the sugar bowl.

Sincerely,
Volnation.

jake, I'm not sure where you work, but if you're free enough for this kind of creativity on VN, I want your job. Is your employer hiring?

good read though.

Watching UGA's demise has been a guilty pleasure for me this year. One of the few bright spots that make me grin when I think about it.

they are going to the Sugar Bowl.....it's not all bad. i'm just sick of the whining. as if they got cheated out of something.

the only thing they didn't do was win the SEC, other than that, i'd say mission accomplished for the dawgs.

now quit whining already.

It's probably not hard to tell that I respect the UGA program. They managed to beat some very tough teams down the stretch and they deserve to be in a BCS game. Seems like they did the same thing last year (improved dramatically as the season progressed).

yeah, and understably so. GA won't be out of the equation most years while Richt is there. while the luster of Richt has worn off for me a little, i still have a healthy respect for GA.

which begs the question......GA has basically become what we used to be......start slow, finish strong. left wondering "where was that at the beginning of the year?". you don't think some GA folks are having the same questions about moreno that we all had about Jamal Lewis?

anyway.....GA had a good year, a year that encompassed the following........getting beat, at home, by a 6-6 SC team, stomping on the V at Vandy after beating them by a fg, an OT win over a Bama team that lost to something called ULM, a throttling at the hands of the supposedly inept Phil Fulmer, a break out blow away win over the Super Tebows, a domination of Auburn and #7 in a row against GT, culminating in a Sugar Bowl berth w/out having not played for or won the SEC title.

if that were TN..............honestly, what would you think?

I know this may sound crazy, but I want an SEC Championship right now more than anything. I could care less about a BCS at large or even a national title if the SECC isn't hooked with it.

Uh, I'm not seeing that as a past tense kind of season for the Vols right now.

that's kind of where i was going with it......i think you look at GA's season, despite how well it turned out, and you have to think "what might have been".

we've had that season before. we've had that sesaon on more than one occaison. and i remember how i felt.

if, but......

i mean, i'm not going to argue with a BCS berth, don't get me wrong, but you look at GA's body of work, they had two seasons in one. one crappy one, and one very good one. and i don't know that would quell anyone's feelings about our own program had we changed places with GA this year.

lose to GA and SC, beat FL and Cal, squeak by Vandy and KY and wind up #4? there'd be a lot of folks saying "good season, but..........."

jake, one difference is that UGA will always be able to say with regard to this season that they were the best team in the SEC that never got a chance to play LSU. Nobody can ever say who would've won that game. It's a lingering question mark.

but it is their fault they didn't get to play LSU. It's not ours. Beat us or USCe and they get their shot.

my question is...why did you waste all this time composing and writing a LOGICAL letter to Georgia fans. they do not have the intelligence to comprehend this, or they wouldn't be georgia fans in the first place.

it's like when i bother to have a coversation with my cat...all she hears is " blah-blah-blah, cat, blah-blah-blah-blah..."

Let's compare the schedules:

Both teams played:

USC - LSU won soundly, UGA lost soundly
UT - LSU won, UGA got stomped
Bama - both won a tight one at the end
UK - UGA won convincly, LSU lost in 3 OT's
Aub - both won but UGA more convincingly
UF - both won but UGA a bit more convincingly

LSU went 7-2 in the SEC with 2 OT losses.
UGA went 6-2 in the SEC with 2 convincing losses.

How in the world could anyone think UGA has a better argument than LSU?
